Episode Notes

This episode ranked 9th out of 12 WB shows for the week.

For this episode's original broadcast, a clip of Willow, Buffy, and Xander's talent show act played over the end credits, as opposed to the usual black screen.

This episode scored a 1.9 in the fast nationals.

Ranked 104 out of 107 prime time shows.

For the talent show Cordelia sings "The Greatest Love of All". Interesting song choice, considering she will also sing this same song in a future episode of spin-off series Angel titled "Slouching Toward Bethlehem."

This episode marks the first appearance of Armin Shimerman as Principal Snyder. He will remain on the series until the end of the third season.

This episode was one of six Season 1 episodes that were released on VHS, prior to the full season DVD releases.

Episode Quotes

Giles: Our new Fuhrer, Mr. Snyder.
Willow: I think they call them "principals" now.

Buffy: Giles, into every generation is born one who must run the annual talentless show. You cannot escape your destiny.
Giles: If you had any shred of decency you would have participated, or at least, um, helped.
Buffy: Nah. I think I'll take on your traditional role... and watch.
Xander: And mock.
Willow: And laugh.

Xander: Can I just mention, that detention is a time-honored form of punishment?
Principal Snyder: I know the three of you will come up with a wonderful act for the school to watch. And mock. And laugh... at.

Principal Snyder: Kids today need discipline. It's not a popular word these days, "discipline". I know Principal Flutie would have said, "Kids need understanding. Kids are human beings." That's the kind of woolly-headed, liberal thinking that leads to being eaten.

Xander: Did I mention that I hate this school?

Willow: (discussing who the killer might be) The creep factor is also heightened. It could be anyone. It could be me! (everyone turns to look at her) It's not, though.

Cordelia: (about Emily being murdered) All I could think is "it could have been me."
Xander: We can dream.

Principal Snyder: There are things I will not tolerate: students loitering on campus after school, horrible murders with hearts being removed... and also smoking.

(Giles stares at Cordelia)
Cordelia: What?
Giles: Oh, I'm sorry. Um, your hair, uh...
Cordelia: There's something wrong with my hair? (tries to adjust it) Oh, my God!
(Cordelia runs off)
Giles: Xander was right. It worked like a charm.

Buffy: This means that whatever's out there still needs a healthy, intelligent brain.
Xander: In other words, I'm safe!

Episode Goofs

When Giles tells Cordelia to picture the audience in their underwear, she stops him, verbally, but in only one shot, she actually has him by the arm.

When Sid stabs the demon in the heart, the knife can visibly be seen in one shot, however it is no longer there in the next one.

Cultural References

Xander: (as Sid) Redrum! Redruuum!

This is a reference to the classic Stephen King horror novel and movie The Shining. "Redrum! Redrum" was a phrase made famous when the young boy in the story would write and chant it. Spelled backwards, its says "Murder".

Xander: Does anybody else feel like they've been Keyser Soze'd?

A reference to the movie The Usual Suspects where in a twist, the character Keyser Soze was actually a bad guy, when he was thought to be good.

Episode References

Principal Snyder: I know Principal Flutie would have said, "Kids need understanding. Kids are human beings." That's the kind of woolly-headed liberal thinking that leads to being eaten.

This is a reference to episode 6 The Pack, in which the previous principal was literally eaten by students.
