A teenaged boy is brutally beaten in an alleyway, but refuses treatment or processing, making investigation of the crime complicated for Nick and Catherine. Meanwhile, Ray and Greg investigate a fire which was apparently set to hide a murder. Things get still more complicated when it turns out there is an apparent connection between the two events. Hodges also talks to Eckley to help Wendy make the switch from lab tech to fieldwork.
