Sqweegel - Recap

<-- Previous EpisodeNext Episode -->
A burglar cuts a circle out of a window to break into someone's home.
He's dressed all in black and carrying a weapon that looks like a
scalpel. The lady of the house, Margot Wilton, is stabbed repeatedly and
left for dead.

When Catherine and Nick arrive at the crime scene, the EMT tells them
that she's going to be okay. It's a real nightmare inside. Nick says
that the EMT is a hero, saved a bunch of kids from a burning building.
Ms. Wilkes is the first lady of Vegas, a philanthropist. Catherine
chimes in that she's got more buildings in Vegas named after her than
can be counted. Frank sends the detectives to the bedroom upstairs and
to the left, warning them that the bedroom is a real horror show. Ray
and Catherine head upstairs while Nick goes to determine how the
perpetrator got in.

Ray notices that two of the pictures included a small boy whose face was
sliced out of the pictures. The Key to the City award has been flipped
upside down, yet still has dust on it.

Nick finds the hole cut out of the glass. Under the hole there are some
glass chips, which he tapes up for evidence.

Catherine and Ray catalog the murder scene. There's no blood trail
leading away from the crime scene. There are reverse hand prints and
footprints leading from the bed to the window. Greg is cataloging
evidence as well. He tells Nick that he found the point of entry. Nick
says he already found it, and explained about the hole in the glass.
Greg says the only reason he could see the perpetrator doing that is to
make it look like he's never been in the house before. All the other
windows were varnished shut, except the one Greg is working on. What
he's discovered thus far indicates somebody was through the window
numerous times. Nick notes how small the window is, and Greg says it
could be a small guy or a kid.

Ray is wondering if Margot is lucky to be alive, or is she alive by
design. The attacker left a message that he didn't approve of her having
the key to the city; so he flipped that wall hanging upside-down. Ray
says based on that and the boy in the wheelchair having his picture
sliced up, it all leads him to believe this was personal. Nick said if
he's been in and out of the house numerous times, as Greg discovered,
how come tonight he sliced her up? Ray thinks the answer is in the
messages he left. It's not in the fingerprints, because he didn't leave
any. Nick says there's one piece of evidence the killer shouldn't have
left behind, and Ray agrees. Margot Wilton.

Ray questions her. She thinks her attacker was African-American. She
referenced "slippery", she thinks he was wearing gloves. She can't get
his eyes out of her mind. She said they were like black holes. Teeth.
Braces. Ray repeats after her, and she becomes unsure. She doesn't
remember, she's not sure. Ray tells her she's very brave, and he
understands why she received the key to the city. He then proceeds to
ask her about the pictures of the young boy in the wheelchair. His name
was Robbie, from her first marriage. He died very young, he was so sick.
Ray apologizes as he removes the stitches from Margot's wounded arm. A
plaque that states "Fortitude, Fulfillment and Philanthropy"; Margot
nods and says she did it for him. She says all she ever wanted to do was
help people, and 15 years later, Mayor Goodman gave her the key to the
city. Ray accidentally cuts her, and when she exclaims in pain, he
apologizes and tells her that her cuts are evidence. She asks if the
doctors and police ever talk to one another. She asked if it wouldn't be
easier if that cute, young intern hadn't stitched her up at all.

Greg walks in and tells Catherine she looks like she just fell down a
chimney. She says that's about the only thing she hasn't printed. She's
been at it for hours and hasn't gotten one usable print. Greg tells her
that when he was walking the perimeter, he noticed a window above the
bedroom window. This home has an attic. He finds the entrance, and the
ladder drops down for him to go up. Greg finds a peek-hole from the
attic that looks down on Margot's bed. He also finds a lipstick cam.
When he smells something, he opens a filing cabinet and finds the drawer
is full of orange peels. He calls down to Catherine that the attacker
has been living up there, and keeping an eye on Margot Wilton.

Nick sees that Margot's mail has been steamed open. Nick helps Catherine
remove the mattress and notes that it looks like they were sleeping
together. Catherine responds that he never touched her until last night.

They have no evidence. Ray notes that the absence of evidence is
evidence, and from that they can draw certain conclusions. Based on the
size of the window he was going in and out of, he's small. And Nick says
that the dust void under her bed would indicate that he is no more than
5'8". Catherine says that he's agile, virtually spider-walked off of
her bed. Foot, hand, hand, foot. Ray adds that he is likely physically
fit, and younger rather than older. Greg notes that he's maniacally
patient. He sat in the attic, eating oranges and watching Margot Wilton,
for possibly weeks - even months. Lying under her bed, reading her mail,
invading her life, and she didn't even know it. Nick notes that this
makes him diabolical.

Ray says with all that information, they are led to the truth. They
decide to reanalyze the evidence, with fresh eyes. Hodges and Nick
examine the body print under the bed. The line that Catherine first
noticed would seem to be urine, but it's in the wrong place. May be
sweat, so Nick tells David to run DNA.

David returns to Nick with the results. The line was sweat. But the DNA
was compromised, so that's a dead end. However, the sweat was not alone.
There were trace elements of the ingredients found in latex body sprays.
The attacker, as Margot had stated, was slippery. He was likely wearing
latex, which zipped up the back, and that is where the sweat came through.

Catherine and Nick go to a sex shop and ask about latex. Nick references
the 'silicone tight sex spray', and the guy at the counter remembers a
guy who placed a large order of the spray, as well as two
"head-to-toes", which is a full body latex suit. All that remains
exposed is eyes, nose and mouth. Catherine asks for records and since he
made the suits himself, he has all manner of information. The buyer had
one blue and one brown eye. The name he left was Ian Moone. No matches
found in the international database. Ray realizes that the name is
scrambled, and it actually reads "I am no one".

A mom is going through the car wash with her daughter, who doesn't like
the car wash. Mom tells her to put in her ear buds and ignore it. The
mom then places a cell call, while her daughter shows her doll the
bubble bath for cars. The man in the latex suit attacks the mom with the
same weapon used on Margot.

Catherine and Greg arrive at the scene. Greg asks what the letter A
written in blood on the windshield is for. The car wash operator tells
them that it was just the mother and daughter, nobody else. Catherine
asks Greg how the hell this happened, if it was just the two of them in
a locked car. They wonder if it's possible he was in the wheel well to
the rear of the vehicle, actually going through the car wash with them.
Catherine wonders how he got away without being seen, and suddenly
realizes he probably didn't get away. They pull their guns as she
announces that the suspect is on the premises. Catherine thinks she may
have him in a large tube, but while Greg is getting the flashlight lined
up, the car wash kicks into gear.

Jim is questioning the daughter. She doesn't feel like talking, but she
silently gives Brass permission to speak with her doll. He's not getting
anywhere until he asks if there's anything she knows that will help them
find who hurt her mommy. She says "Sqweegel". He doesn't understand so
asks her to repeat it, and she does. Her dad then arrives and she runs
into his arms. Jim then questions her dad, asking if he knew anyone
that would want to hurt his wife. He says yes, and Brass asks him to
explain. He says that his wife, Carrie Jones, was recently appointed to
the Family Values Committee. She made it impossible for kids to buy
video games that were sexually or violently graphic. He said that this
is not the first time Carrie was attacked. While he was at work, and
their daughter Elise was in daycare, a guy broke into their home and cut
her up pretty bad.

Ray tells Al that based on the wounds, he is relatively certain that
whoever attacked Margo, killed Carrie Jones. Ray says he needs to see
what was under her bed. They go to the Jones home and find a dust void,
just like the one under Margot's bed. Ray takes photos as Nick comments
that he was definitely here. Brass walks in and says "Sqweegel". He
tells Nick and Ray that that's the name the little girl gave the killer.
Greg says everything is exactly the same as Margot's home, even up to
the hole in the ceiling with the lipstick cam in it. They all look up
and see it. Greg goes to check out the attic.

Nick sees something on the mattress. He cuts the edges of it and finds a
disc with the letter A on it; just like was written in blood on the
windshield of the vehicle at the car wash. Ray takes a picture, and then
they check out the DVD. Carrie is in a car, making out with a man who is
not her husband. Her husband is in the room with Ray, and asks him to
please turn it off. Ray does so, and begins questioning Mr. Jones. He
asks if he hired a PI to follow his wife. Jones asks why he'd do that?
She stands for truth, and morality, and family values. He says that the
first time Carrie was attacked, she told the police that the man who did
it to her kept saying to her "I know. Confess."

Ray goes over the chain of events with Brass. Sqweegel attacked Carrie,
leaving her alive. He gave her a chance to confess, and when she didn't,
he killed her. Margot's life is in danger if she doesn't admit her
secret. Jim and Ray want to put her in a hotel with 24-hour security.
She thinks the chances of him coming back are a million to one. Ray
tells her she was not his only victim.

Margot's attorney, Oscar, arrives and tells them to back off, quit with
the fear tactics. Jim tells him that there are no fear tactics. Ray adds
that they have every reason to believe her life is in danger. Ray says a
few words to Brass, and Jim takes Oscar for a word in private. It's a
ruse so that Ray can have a private word with Margot. He lays out for
her exactly what happened to Carrie, and asks if her secret has to do
with her son, or the key to the city. She tells him his minute is up,
and walks away.

Brass arrives at Margot's home, and Oscar meets him at the door. He
tells Jim that if he so much as knocks on that door, he'll have him up
on harassment charges. As they are walking away, his tone becomes casual
and he tells Jim not to mind his bark; she's a friend. Margot is going
through the filing cabinet in the attic. Recent orange peels in the
bottom drawer tell her he's been back since CSI was there. Sqweegel
holds up a sheaf of envelopes and whispers "looking for your letters?"
in a mocking tone of voice. Margot falls down to the floor below the
attic in her desperate effort to escape him. She's knocked unconscious
when she lands.

Nick is called to an abandoned vehicle, which turns out to have been a
gift to the EMT, Ryan Fink, that rescued the kids from the burning
building. There's blood on a sheet in the front seat of the car. Nick
breaks the window open and finds more blood. Sqweegel is hanging upside
down over Margot when she comes to. She runs and tries to escape. In her
haste, she falls down the stairs. Sqweegel comes down after her. Nick
tries to convince Brass they should go in and check on her. Margot asks
Sqweegel what he wants from her. He says he thinks she knows. He read
her letters, he listened to her phone calls. She finally says what he
wanted her to admit. Robbie drowned, but it was not an accident. Margot
killed him. She believed in her heart that it was the right thing to do.

She reaches in the drawer, grabs a gun and shoots Sqweegel five times.
Jim runs in. Sqweegel is gone, and Jim says he knew she'd go for the
gun, so he replaced the bullets with blanks. Brass tells Mitch to get
Margot out of there, and Nick to check upstairs. Everybody else searches
the place for Sqweegel. Ray gets upstairs and looks under the bed. He
sees the suit, so proceeds with caution. Nick and Catherine arrive, but
the body under the bed is dead. Ray removes the head cover from the
body, and it's the paramedic, Ryan Fink. Attacked first, then killed,
just like Carrie Jones. That's why he bought two suits; one for one of
his victims.

Greg steams open Margot's letters. She wrote Robbie's dad, Henry, and
told him the truth of how Robbie died. She hoped that she'd have the
guts to mail the letter. Robbie asked to be put out of his misery. She
told him she couldn't, and he said that she could; if she loved him. So
she did. She pushed his wheelchair into the pool, and stood there
watching him die. That's why she had to go back to the house, she was
trying to get the letters.

Brass tells Catherine and Ray that tipsters have been calling the fire
department hotline. They say that Ryan Fink has been setting fires to
make himself look like a hero. Catherine notes that that's his secret.
Ray says that the biggest secret of all is "Who is Ian Moone".

Sqweegel is before a mirror, and he whispers "I am no one."
