A man is making stew which contains an ear and a finely cut up credit
card. He feeds it to a man who is missing an ear, and tied to a chair.
Brass is filling Nick and Ray in on the truck headed for the landfill.
As it passed through the security gate, the guard noticed a suspicious
ooze, and told the driver. The driver jumped out, checked the vehicle,
and called CSI. Nick announces that it looks, smells, and tests like
blood. He tells the driver to open the truck. It's full of shredded
tin. Nick finds something that could be a bit of a body. Ray finds
something that says Cafe Perka, part of a capuccino machine. Nick finds
part of a steel-belted radial, while Ray finds a bell. He figures that
the rest of the bike is in there, somewhere. When Brass' flashlight
picks up an eyeball, he mutters "Here's looking at you, kid."
Nick and Catherine talk to the foreman of a shredding business. He said
they shred a lot of things, but not bodies. Somebody so much as gets a
paper cut, and they have to report it. They have cameras everywhere,
not to mention OSHA. Greg hands over a warrant, so they can shut down
the line and question the night shift.
Except for the big stuff most companies just send their destructibles in
padlocked bins. They fill them up at their offices, arrange for secure
transport, and the shredder company takes it from there. The night shift
is completely accounted for. Greg figures that if he was going to dump a
body, this would be a really good way to go. Nick finds more tissue in
the shredder, so Sara, Greg and Hodges arrive to go through everything
that truck had carried. Hodges is back in the field to try to get over
Wendy. Sara loses at rock, paper, scissors and gets stuck with "yuck".
Catherine joins Al in the lab. He has learned that she and Vartan are
together, and congratulates her. Back to business; the weight of the
parts indicates that they are only looking at one body. He's sent out
for DNA results to back that up. The victim was dead before being
shredded, approximately 36-48 hours. A portion of the cranial bone shows
a hint of a beveled edge. The victim was likely shot. Al found bullet
fragments, and Catherine informs him that Greg found bullet fragments in
the grinds of the shredder. They'll check all the fragments with ballistics.
Ray gets a letter from the Nevada Department of Corrections. He can feel
that there is more in there than a letter. It says "Thinking of you, X
O, Nate" and there is a kidney bean inside. Ray crumples and throws the
letter, as Sara is entering his office. She asks if everything is
alright and he says yes. She fills him in on the credit card bits
they've been finding. Hodges is going to Run them through trace. Ray is
still preoccupied, and Sara asks him again if he's OK. He says yes.
She gives him back his bean that she finds on the floor before him.
DNA came back. One body, unidentified white male. Hodges has put
together the clam chowder mix that the victim was fed before dying. Four
of the pieces contained part of the metal strip on the back of the
credit card. That may be enough to come up with the victim's identity.
Larry Lamotte. Greg knows him, or rather, OF him. For a monthly fee, Mr.
Lamotte's internet company helps protect your identity.
Brass and Ray go to Lamotte's office. They are stonewalled by his
executive assistant and the head of security who say he's on vacation at
an undisclosed location and unreachable. Brass and Ray agree, saying
they think he might be dead. Larry Lamotte joins them, asking if it's
true that he's dead. He tells them he's not the guy in the ads because
of Marketing 101. If you have something to sell, get somebody pretty to
sell it. Wesley, from the mail room, is the guy in the ads. He's
currently on the floor, doing his job. Brass asks Lamotte if his credit
cards have been stolen. Larry starts his spiel about identity theft,
but Brass interrupts him. The case raises some very serious questions.
Larry reacts angrily, claiming that he is the victim here. A great
many Fortune 500 companies rely on him to protect their data. His
company made $120,000,000 last year. The head of security wonders why
they'd risk all that to go after some penny ante credit card thief? Ray
tells them that raises the issue that whoever killed their victim thinks
they killed the real Larry Lamotte.
Brass asks Larry if he has any enemies. He answers with a smile
"thousands". He has his executive assistant pull a list of their
offender files, and tells her to get two starter packets. He tells Ray
and Brass that his partners in law enforcement get a discount.
Nick fills in Catherine on Larry Lamotte. There are thousands of
complaints. Rather than protecting their identities, he stole them.
Their credit card numbers found their way to Nigeria. ID Preserve
passed it off as an unfortunate security breach, but one of his
customers didn't buy it. Lee DeVries drove a truck through ID Preserve's
front window and started waving a gun around, demanding face time with
Larry Lamotte. He did six months in county and got out four weeks ago.
His first job when he got out was for the temp company that supplies
workers to the shredder company.
Nick leaves to fill in Brass, but Catherine stops him at the door. She
heard he stopped with his psych meeting. He says it's no big deal, he
went for his mandatory two times. Nick notes her worry and tells her
he's fine. He's working out, getting enough sleep - healthy body,
healthy mind, right? She still looks concerned.
Brass interrogates Lee, who is in a world of hurt thanks to Lamotte.
Brass switches chairs with him, and confesses to the murder. Lee has no
idea what he's talking about but boy does he have an alibi. Thanks to
Lamotte, there's six Lee DeVries out there.
Greg tells Hodges that he's apprehensive about his ID, now that he knows
the truth about ID Preserve. The bullet fragments are from two
different guns, but they could still had been fired by the same person.
One wound was significantly older than the cause of death.
Sara tells Ray that most of the stuff in the truck came from IDP itself.
Ray notes that maybe Larry Lamotte's hands aren't so clean. He is
willing to bet Larry would say there was no body in the bins when they
left his office. Sara did some checking and found that ID preserve uses
a subcontractor. That company is run by Lamotte's head of security,
Julius Caplan. They go over all the bins, and find blood in one of them.
Greg tells Catherine he traced one of the cards to a Po Box in Gallup,
New Mexico. Greg tracked him to Vegas, where he made a series of small
purchases. Greg is glad he wasn't shy, because the guy's picture was
taken when he bought gas, used the ATM, etc. They're going to shoot for
a facial recognition match. Sara fills him in on finding blood in the bin.
Nick and Sara arrive at Caplan's place with a team of cops. Nick finds
a door with no doorknob, locked by deadbolt. They break in and find the
room where the victim was forcefed the chowder. The room contains canned
clams, and Nick finds a gun placed on top of them.
Sara finds Caplan shot out by the pool, and a bullet casing nearby.
David puts time of death at approximately 5:00 p.m. They realize the
killer put the gun right up to his head. There's a beer bottle in the
pool, the splash of which created a weird void in the blood spatter.
They surmise it must've been someone he knew and trusted with no sign of
forced entry. The neighbors have a surveillance camera so they may get
lucky with footage. Sara recreates someone behind Caplan, handing him a
beer on the left while shooting him in the right side of his head.
Ray discusses Caplan's death with Larry Lamotte. Because it's not a
formal interview, he has no attorney present. His assistant is ordered
to take down every word. Lamotte's goes on to sing Caplan's praises.
As soon as he's done, they show him Caplan's mug shot and fill him in on
his aliases. One of those is Julius Child because he was a mob
collector who would feed his victims. He'd always add some special
ingredient; casino chips, a chopped up credit card, etc. Lamotte claims
he is shocked. He becomes irritated and tries to blame everything on
Caplan. How handy.
Video camera footage from Caplan's neighbor shows a car leaving his
house near the time of the murder. The bad news is that the driver is
obscured. Also, at the point where they could have seen the plate,
another vehicle passes.
The gun that killed Caplan isn't the one that killed shredder guy. The
gun that did kill him has a weird history. It was used in a shooting in
Reno six years earlier. The victim walked out without ever being
identified. They pull out the cold case file and hope new technology
will help with IDing what's up with the gun. It does: Shredder guy is
the John Doe from the shooting six year earlier. Julius Caplan killed
shredder guy, and the someone else shot Caplan with the same gun. Why
did shredder guy have a credit card with Lamotte's name on it sent to
him in NM? Ray remembers Julius' words from the first interview. "Why
kill a penny ante thief? He's not worth the risk."
Sara begs to differ. Especially if the man in question is threatening to
bring down the entire ID Preserve company. She found shredder guy's ID
from Florida. His name? Larry Lamotte.
Larry Lamotte is actually Arlo Cardin, career criminal. Brass and Ray
tell him that they got his print off the six year-old bullet casing.
They give Arlo their theory. He was the man who robbed and shot the real
Larry Lamotte, who was his old partner in crime. Arlo obviously thought
Larry was dead and that his name was still good, unlike his own (which
had a long rap sheet attached to it). The real Larry called and
threatened him, demanding a payoff, so Arlo had Larry killed. He then
killed Caplan with the same gun he used six years earlier.
Arlo says the real Larry extorted him for five million dollars. He
ordered Julius to give him the money and then Julius killed him. He
further states that anyone who came into his house could've had access
to his gun. The statute of limitation on the original crime is two years
in Nevada, even if a gun is involved. So he admits he attempted to kill
Larry Lamotte six years ago, but that's it.
Nick and Catherine discover that faux Lamotte did take out $5,000,000 a
few days ago. Nick thinks Caplan went rogue, killing Lamotte and
keeping the money for himself. If that happened, then maybe Arlo killed
Caplan to get his money back. But there's no sign of the money.
Archie reports that the video from the neighbor's house showed a partial
plate of the car leaving the scene. He does a bit more digging and
discovers that Lee DeVries rented the vehicle. Lee is not at home or at
work. A neighbor states that he is visiting his girlfriend in
Henderson. Ray takes a call - the car has been spotted heading south.
Arlo's executive assistant was making her escape with a briefcase full
of cash.
Ray tells her that information is currency. She knows everything, and
used all the information to her advantage. She admits to killing Caplan.
She got tired of being used in every possible way. Elaine Travers rolled
over on Arlo Cardin.
Back at the station Nick invites Catherine out for beers and a chat
about their feelings. She passes. Catherine then overhears Greg arguing
with someone on the phone about how he's never been to Kurdistan and he
certainly didn't create $1200 in charges. Hodges touches base with
Katherine about personal life.
Sara walks in on Ray examining his scars. She tells him that given
enough time, he will hardly see them. Some scars heal faster than
others. He tells her about Nate's note and the kidney bean. Sara tells
him to not let Nate in his head. Ray says he's already in there. She
tells him she finally realized that everything that happens to them good
and bad doesn't have to define who they are. She wishes him a good night.
