CSI: Crime Scene Investigation: Burked

A gardener, outside the house, observes Tony Braun, a known drug addict and old-time Vegas casino mogul (i.e., with suggested mafia ties), face down in his house and, judging by the paraphernalia surrounding the body, the apparent cause of death is a drug overdose. However, once the investigation begins, Grissom detects evidence of duct tape on the body, which leads the CSIs to believe that the victim was restrained and forced to ingest lethal amounts of drugs.

This is the first of many appearances of Scott Wilson as Sam Braun, a long-time family friend of Catherine's, who she later finds out is actually her father.

The dog that appears as Sam Braun's dog is in fact owned by George Eads (Nick Stokes). His name is Maverick and he is also used "in an unrelated role" in the seventh episode this season, "Caged"

Episode Quotes
Brass: Newsflash, sweetheart. You can't make a deal if you keep your mouth shut.

Grissom: Did you try this coffee?
Nick: Mm-mm.
Grissom: The last cup I had tasted like motor oil.

Brass: Can you get a print off those balloons?
Warrick: I can get a print off the air.

Jim: A plus B plus C equals 9-1-1.

Catherine: It sure seems that way.
Gil: If only life were that simple.

Catherine: Who's this?
Jim: It's Braun's 'Squeeze'. She's an ex-stripper, too. Perhaps you two met in a professional capacity.

Janine Haywood: Listen -- if anything is missing from this house I'm going to add you to my lawyer's 'to sue' list.

Sam Braun: (to Catherine) I remember the first time I saw you. You didn't have any clothes on.

Greg: That's my pot!
Gil: Your pot?
Greg: Yeah, you know, from my own private stash. Blue Hawaiian -- $40 a pound. Only grown a couple times a year on the Big Island hand-picked to perfection.
Gil: Good. You're using my water so I guess that makes it community coffee.

Gil: It's been 24 minutes, Greg. When's this thing going to be done?
Greg: Well, with all due respect, sir, it's not a baked potato.

Greg: Did I ever tell you I used to live in New York?
Gil: Is this going to be a short story or a novel?

Catherine: (to Gil) Is this part of the Sherlock Holmes Fan Club Kit?

Catherine: He was 'burked'.

Det. Sam Vega: That's the quickest warrant I ever got.
Catherine: Yep. Braun family. Long arms.

Catherine: (to Jim) Flimsy alibis don't prove murder.

Sam Braun: (to Catherine) You know, I should've married your mother.

Walt Braun: When you're a Braun there's nothing you can't replace.
Gil: You can't replace your brother.

Jim: Let me guess -- she's incommunicado.
Janine Haywood: That means you can't reach her? Yeah.

Walt Braun: You're looking at my brother's trophy?"
Bonnie Ritten: No, my husband's bimbo.

Analysis
The plotline is straight out of classical literature. The son of a wealthy businessman is found dead of an apparent overdose. Further investigation reveals he was murdered. The suspects are his girlfriend and his brother. The wealthy businessman has an obvious connection to one of the investigators on the case. The key to the case turns out to be a mysterious earring back that proves the gold-digging girlfriend innocent and convicts the victim’s wife and brother.

The underlying plot in this episode is the relationship between Sam Braun and Catherine Willows. We find out that they have known each other for most of Catherine’s life. Grissom even encourages Catherine to use her connection with Braun to help the case along. Sam freely gives information to her during the investigation. The end of the episode reveals the history of their relationship. Sam was once involved with Catherine’s mother. He even regrets not marrying her.

It is a very interesting case, pointing the viewer towards the wrong suspect until nearly the end of the episode. It also sets up the plotline for the season three finale and several other episodes that follow that.
