When one cult member turns up missing at a mass suicide crime scene, Grissom and his team investigate whether the small cult really committed suicide or were murdered.
A middle of the night break-in at a suburban home on the edge of the Vegas desert leads the CSIs to discover an abandoned military compound being used to house a small cult. Once inside, they discover a mass suicide has taken place. However, with 11 bodies and 12 beds, Grissom surmises that the killer may be the one body missing.

Episode Quotes |
| |
Sara: College student.
Mandy: Yeah, very impressionable. When I start my religion that's where I'm going to recruit. | Catherine: Did you notice those buzzards earlier?
Grissom: No, but something sure smells good to 'em. | Brass: So dump the body, raid the refrigerator.
Grissom: I guess they had an appetite for murder. | David: Looks like a money belt.
Dr. Robbins: Gives new meaning to strapped for cash. | (while walking in the desert)
Grissom: I'd like to see the pyramids one day.
Catherine: Keep walking. We could come upon them today. | Greg: I also found a melted name tag with a sun burst logo. Figured I'd let my finger do the walking.
Sara: You scanned the Yellow Pages.
Greg: I knew the first three letters. By the way, do you know how many companies in Las Vegas start with S-U-N?
Sara: I so don't care. | Catherine: Two people are missing.
Grissom: Maybe they caught the space ship.
Catherine: (Pulls out the bowl of burnt letters) Would you settle for a flying saucer. | Abigail: You don't believe we're alone in the universe?
Grissom: Abigail, I'm sure if there is something out there looking down on us from somewhere else in the universe...they're wise enough to stay away from us. | Grissom: Are you having the same mirage, as I am?
Catherine: Yeah, a silver Beamer in the middle of the damn desert. | Grissom: But I got water, we can share.
Catherine: Who are you today? Moses? (Catherine pulls out her phone) Hey Jim. Grissom and I are going to take a little walk |

Title: Shooting Stars
A "Shooting Star" is a common English euphemism for the visible meteorite trail as something burns up in the atmosphere on reentry. Since the cult is tied to astronomical events, this is used as a titular reference alluding to the Heaven's Gate cult. | Overall Plot concept: Heaven's Gate
In 1997, one of the most visible comets in the last century appeared, a comet known as Hale-Bopp, after its co-discoverers. The arrival and appearance of the comet was a central part of the mass suicide of a cult known as Heaven's Gate. There are clear echoes of that event in this episode's concept. | Grissom: Or maybe they had An Appetite for Murder.
This could be a reference to a mystery book by Cecile Lamalle or Kath Borich, both entitled An Appetite for Murder. | (to Grissom as he heads out into the desert)
Catherine: Who are you today? Moses?
In the Bible, Moses and his people wandered in the desert for 40 years after he lead them out of Egypt. |
