The title is a euphemism for the look a freshly dead person has in their eyes -- the unfocused, unfollowing, and totally unaware appearance of seeing the world, while they may still be utterly warm-bodied and apparently normal in appearance. You can sense that, though they may look fine, their eyes suggest that the body is empty of a knowing, living being.
