This was an odd episode. I don't know if this will make sense, but it seemed very CSI: Miami -- the plot was scattered, Greg spending most of his screentime crawling around on the floor, and the ending didn't actually explain anything about Brass. Catherine is definitely the character holding the series together with Grissom gone.

The explosion was pretty awesome, though.

Yeah, I think that the problem is they are short two "main" cast members and they haven't yet decided who to boost, if anyone, to fill the remaining slots, or how.

I'm not so sure it's Catherine, though, but Fishburne who appears to be the central element of most eps (no surprise, being the Big Fish). She seems, in some eps, to be doing a walk-on (see below).

I don't know if anyone has noticed, but it's like EVERYONE gets a part, even if it's small, in every episode, including "relatively minor" characters like David(ME asst), Hodges, Wendy, and Mandy. Mandy, in fact, has gotten the least attention -- David got his chance to do a sole autopsy, as well as a number of lines in various eps ("That's because you're a medical examiner, dammit, not a couch potato!"), Hodges and Wendy both got their ep in Space Oddity. Only Mandy didn't get to be central, as I recall.

And even if someone isn't actually going to do much in the episode, the regulars have a small part, too -- like you were talking about with Greg. (For All In, it was Nick's turn to do the walk on -- "I'm off to a conference, bye!!"). There was another ep, I forget which one, in which Catherine was barely there.

I notice this filling out the regular cast list week after week.

There's no question the show is looking for a sort of focus that it's lacked without Petersen. I do think they've done an adequate job with the stories anyway, but there is a cohesive element that they need to find a replacement for. Losing three major cast members in a single season, that's not much of a surprise, I guess.
