At sentencing, Hank refuses to throw himself on the mercy of the court. The only thing he's truly sorry for is embarrassing Becca and Karen. Everything else is just noise. He thanks her for her time, and holds up his fist and adds "Free the West Memphis Three!" The judge moves ahead. She tells Hank he lives like an animal who behaves in flagrant defiance of the rules of society. She has received many letters asking for leniency. His true crime, in her estimation, is his commitment to squandering his gifts. She comments on Becca, and says she is forced to consider what time without her father will do to her. She sentences him to three years.
Abby slaps him back to consciousness. He fainted, like a little girl. Are they going to come take him away in handcuffs now? No, Abby doesn't think so. Why not? He got three years, didn't he? Yes he did. Probation. No jail time? No jail time. He grabs and kisses her, right there on the floor of the courtroom, and again in bed. Say it again! "Three years probation. $25,000 fine, and 288 hours of community service." Hank says that never has he been so excited to write a huge check, and service the community for twelve days. This is the first day of the rest of his life. What's he going to do with it?
Hank and Abby hit the open road in his convertible. They arrive at a Hollywood party. They are kissing when Karen and Ben arrive, holding hands. Karen notes that Hank moves fast! Or is this how he's paying off his bill. Hank introduces Abby and Ben. Hank embarrasses himself at Ben's expense some more. Ben asks Karen if he can shoot Hank, and Abby answers. If he does, she'll defend him. She's going in to look at the house, and Ben joins her.
Karen and Hank snipe at each other outside the house. Karen claims she's not jealous, but Hank doesn't buy it. She wants to talk to him about something serious, but now's not good. Charlie arrives with Peggy. She's so disgusting that both Hank and Charlie are rendered speechless.
Sasha meets Hank by the pool. Her date had hopes they'd lock up Hank and throw away the key. She's not interested in Hank anymore, since he slept with her mother.
Eddie joins the party. Stu brings the crowd up to speed, including his love for Marcy. Peggy asks Charlie if he'll toast her like that someday, and he laughs. She starts freaking out, and Charlie reminds her that she wanted him to tell her if she acted crazy. Well, now he's telling her.
Eddie toasts Hank, then starts questioning Karen about what keeps her coming back to Hank. He needs to pick her brain, in honor of the movie. Eddie invites Ben to come down to the set, as he has quite the following in the African-American community. Ben says no, because they're leaving town tomorrow. Hank overhears, and wants more information. Karen says it's no big. She and Ben are taking Becca and Pearl on a road trip in an RV.
Eddie plays the table, pulling stuff out of everybody. He starts on Abby, and how she feels about Karen and Hank's relationship. She says this is really their first date, but Karen already knows that they're sleeping together. Abby reacts to Hank telling her. Peggy is bored because she's not the center of attention. Marcy calls her on her behavior, and Peggy calls her all dried up. Stu announces that Marcy is the wettest woman he's ever known. Stu is graphic, and Peggy coos that she gets it. Hormone replacement. Good for Marcy. Charlie rebukes Peggy, and she demands to know if he's still in love with her. Of course he loves her, he'll always love her. The only reason he slept with Peggy was because he was trying to forget about Marcy, but it's impossible.
Marcy pushes back her chair and announces that the baby she's carrying is Charlie's. Really? Because he had a dream about that just the other night. Peggy wigs out and puts a knife through Charlie's hand into the table. Marcy flies across the table and attacks Peggy, as Charlie screams. Stu yells at Marcy about the baby. Hank pulls the knife out of Charlie's hand while Abby tries to comfort him, and Sasha's date vomits. Eddie has a major boner, he wants everybody to know. Stu peels Marcy off of Peggy, who immediately lands in Eddie's arms. They come up for air long enough for Eddie to assure Charlie he'll handle her. She's just his kind of psycho.
Abby comes out to the pool where Hank is walking on water. She tells him she's getting a lift from someone. He's got such a good heart, but he's trapped in the past, and she can't join him there. He accuses her of bailing, and Abby comes back to tell him that's exactly what he wants. But she's not. She's just calling it a night. And he knows where to find her. She kisses him goodnight. Hank drinks and thinks for a few seconds, and then calls "Hey lady lawyer!" but he loses his footing and falls, striking his head and losing consciousness before sinking underwater. He thinks Jesus rescues him, but it's actually Ben.
Ben gives Hank mouth-to-mouth. Hank says Ben saved his life, but Ben feels he didn't have a choice. Hank would have haunted him, if he let him die. He asks Ben if he kisses Karen like that. It was really nice. Ben laughs, and helps Hank to his feet.
Hank wakes up to a knock at the door. It's Becca, Karen said she could run in and say goodbye before they hit the road. Hank says he doesn't know how to say goodbye. Becca asks if he's mad at her, does he think she's betraying him? Hank says no, no. Go, have fun. Bring him back one of those t-shirts that ends "and all I got was this lousy t-shirt." Becca's glad to be saying goodbye this way, instead of before he goes to prison.
Mom said he could go home while they're gone. Hank doesn't think it's home without them in it. Before she leaves, Becca says she thinks everything's going to be okay. Chapters end. Sometimes you have to shake things up. Check out of this dump. Go home. He shakes her hand, and she leaves.
Hank loads his car up and drives to the movie set while the Stones play "You Can't Always Get What You Want." He greets everybody including Sasha, Marcy, Charlie and Eddie. He wanders the set, which is based no his house. The actress playing Karen asks him questions about his relationship with Karen, what made her so special. He kisses her, but he sees Karen. He takes her to bed.
Karen, Ben and Becca walk out of a convenience store just as Hank's car pulls up, but it's not. Same car, different driver. Karen looked apprehensive and Becca looked hopeful.
Hank walks out of a trailer with the Karen actress, and watches her walk over to the Becca actress. The two of them walk into the set, and Hank gets in his car and heads for the open road.
