LOS ANGELES (Hollywood Reporter) - Showtime has given a second-season pickup to its freshman comedy series "Californication."

The premium network has ordered 12 new episodes of the half-hour series, starring David Duchovny as a novelist who moves to Los Angeles and develops a case of writer's block. Natascha McElhone co-stars as the mother of his preteen daughter (Madeleine Martin). Evan Handler and Madeline Zima round out the cast.

The show is set to enter production on Season 2 in April for a likely summer debut.

I love this series, but it's going to run its course if the show doesn't mix things up a little with Hank Moody. His character's getting a bit long in the tooth. First, he's gotta face the Mia thing if for no other reason than because he needs to take ownership over his script. This has got to be a major meltdown, and besides, how else is Karen going to tolerate his terminal brain freeze, and corresponding lack of funds? Not that money's everything, but come on. With this in mind, he'll have to do a stint in therapy with some hot woman who will decide to turn him in for admitting to statutory rape, unless of course, he sleeps with her; which will be tough given the Karen thing. Whatever. I look forward to the new season.
