Cultural References
(After Castle speaks Chinese)
Beckett: Semester abroad?
Castle: No, TV show I used to love.
That is a reference to the TV show
Firefly, where Nathan Fillion, who plays Castle, starred. The show used Chinese quite frequently, usually when insulting people or cursing.
The X-Files
Castle whistles the theme song of The X-Files twice during the show. Becket says the famous motto of the show, the truth is out there. At the end of the episode, an image of lightning striking the ground flashes for a few frames. This is similar to footage of lightning used at the end of the title sequence of The X-Files.
