The scene opens with a trial of Ottis Williams who is being charged with killing Lyla Addison. A juror starts to have an attack of something and then collapses to the ground. Meanwhile, Martha is trying to get Castle to drink a health drink and he thinks that it is disgusting. Alexis comes down and says that she is going to go out with her friends. She takes a drink of the health drink and Castle tells Martha that Alexis just lied about where she is going. Martha tells him not to worry about it. Castle tells that he wants to go see Forbidden Planet, but he gets a call from Beckett. He arrives at the station and Beckett says that they have Joe McQeusic as a victim. She says that Lannii thinks that he was poisoned. Castle says that the case has all the makings of a good John Grisham novel and texts his Poker buddies calling “dibs” on the story.

They get into the examination room and Lannii confirms her suspicion and says that Joe was poisoned, by cyanide. She says that it is possible that it was put into his coffee and Lannii puts Joe’s time of death around the time that he was in the courtroom. Castle and Beckett go to the courthouse and Ryan says that Ottis Williams is the defendant and he has a long list of charges. Ottis was caught in the car where they found Lyla’s body. Castle says that it is brilliant on the defendant’s part because now he has struck fear in every other juror and the case will go for a mistrial. Ryan says that Ottis couldn’t have done it because he was incarcerated. Beckett and Castle walk up to Ottis Williams and ask him about Joe and Ottis’s lawyer says that they have nothing to say.
In the courtroom, the judge files the case as a mistrial and says that he has Ottis Williams remanded while the District Attorney Karnacki says that they going to be refilling charges. The father of Layla gets up and tries to get Ottis, but his son stops him. Back at the station, Ryan says that it is going to take hours. Esposito comes up and says that a juror by the name of Tony Muller has not been seen back on the jury and a neighbor says that he saw Tony leaving with an overnight bag. He says that he put out an APB on him. Joe’s brother comes in and says that Joe was a good guy and that he didn’t hurt anyone. Joe’s brother says that Joe has a few run-ins with the law, but he was a good guy. Castle wonders if Joe was chosen by random or was he supposed to be there. Beckett asks if Joe ever had any problems at the halfway house, but he says that he has not. Esposito says that the police picked up Tony Muller. Beckett and Castle talk to Tony and he says that it was Ottis’s homeboy that intimidated him. They ask him to describe the man to a sketch artist and Tony says that the guy’s name is Wardell Williams, the defendant’s cousin because he sees it on the television. They watch a video and see that Wardell is talking to Joe and hands him a coffee.
They bring him to the station and Wardell tells that he didn’t poison anyone’s coffee and that he was only talking to Joe. Wardell takes the offense and tries to leave. Beckett tells him to sit down or she will sit him down. He says that his cousin is being framed for something he didn’t do. He says that it may look like he is poisoning the coffee, but he only handed it to him. Beckett asks Esposito to get a warrant for Wardell’s place. Castle says that Alexis is not supposed to be in town, but she is not according to the GPS tracker on her phone. Castle shows Beckett his application and Beckett warns Castle that it is a breach into Alexis’s privacy. Beckett gets a call and both her and Castle go to Lannii and she says that there is no cyanide in the coffee. Joe has a time release capsule full of cyanide. The killer must have switched out the contents and Joe was poisoned one hour before his time before getting at the courthouse. Beckett says that the killer had access to Joe’s apartment.
Ryan and Esposito go to Joe’s apartment and collect the poison. Ryan says a quote and Esposito says that he is not Castle and for him to stop acting like him. Ryan says that he is a Renaissance Man. They see the door of a closet open slightly and suddenly a man jumps out. They take him to the station and find out that his name is Nick Fanzell, a local who has been staying with Joe even though he was kicked out. He says that he didn’t kill Joe and that he only hid because he is on parole. Nick says that Joe had him run errands and gave him $2,000 to give to a lady. Beckett and Castle go to Ms. Jenkins and she says that she did it. They are shocked, but she tells that Joe paid her to put him on the jury. She says that she did it because she needed the extra cash for rent and she doesn’t want to go to prison. She says that she put him in the pool of it and got in the jury by himself. Beckett wonders if Joe has a background of them and wants to see if there is something with Joe.

Later, Alexis gets home and Castle asks if she went other places besides in Manhattan. She asks how Castle knew that she went to Brooklyn and he says that his friend J.J. Adams told him. Alexis realizes that J.J. Adams was a character Leslie Nielson played in “Forbidden Planet”. She finds out that he has been tracking her phone and goes upstairs angry. The next day at the station Beckett tells the “I told you so” chant and says that he has to work on winning it back. They question the District Attorney and the Addison Family. Steve says that he has never met him before. District Attorney Karnacki tells Montgomery that they need to case solved quickly. Ryan says that he found Joe found a burner phone and goes back to his apartment. Castle shows that Joe was at the crime scene of Lyla Addison. Castle says that Joe is the victim and killer. Castle says that it is the best twist ever and Beckett wants to wonder why Joe would buy his way on the jury. Esposito says that Joe was at a fundraiser and alibis out. Beckett asks if they are missing something and Ryan comes back and says that he found the phone and Joe made several calls to Karnaki’s office.
Castle and Beckett meet with Dawn Craig, Karnacki’s assistant, and she says that she remembers Joe calling and saying that he had evidence that would prove that Ottis Williams was innocent and she thought that he was crazy. However, there was a call at 7pm that lasted 10 minutes long. Dawn says that she leaves earlier than that. Suddenly, Karnacki comes in and tells that this interview is over. He gets angry with Montgomery and tells him to curb his employees. He apologizes to him and Karnacki leaves. Montgomery congratulates Beckett for calling in one of Karnacki’s staff without telling him. He is definitely hiding something. Castle gets into work the next day and says that it is a conspiracy, but Beckett is one step ahead. Castle says that the Addisons were the biggest contributors to Karnacki’s campaign. It was good for him, until Joe had evidence that he mailed supposedly to Karnacki. They wonder more and Beckett tells that they need to talk to Ottis.
They bring Ottis down and he goes through the scenario and says that he saw a car that was nice and got in it. He says that he had to move the seat up because it was pushed all the way back. Beckett asks if they dusted for prints on the seat button and they say that they didn’t. She has CSU run it. Alexis shows up at the station and Castle shows that he is deleting the application to track her phone. She tells Castle that she was in Boston that day paying the store owner money for clothing that her friends took. She won’t tell who did the crime, but tells that she won’t be in that situation. Castle tells her that he is proud of her and angry at the same time. Beckett says that she has a report and the second prints belong to Joe’s brother. He tells that there has to be a mistake and they tell he killed Lyla. Castle tells that he killed Joe when he told Joe. However, he is confused about the medication laced with cyanide. They ask what happened and Joe’s brother finally says that they won’t believe him. They says that they will and he tells that it was Steven, Lyla’s brother, killed Lyla because they were coke fiends who needed to make a drug run and Steven accidently killed Lyla. Steven threatened him that he would point the finger. The evidence that Joe had was Steven’s bloody clothes that he sent to Karnacki.

Montgomery goes to Karnacki’s office and he admits that he is putting the rush on the case and confesses that he will do anything to get the Mayor seat. Montgomery shows that he is wearing a wire and he tries to convince Montgomery that he will make him Commissioner when he is Mayor. Later at the station, Steven gets arrested for the murder of Lyla and Joe and Montgomery says that he will put in a good word for Karnacki and tells them that they did good work. Castle asks what Beckett’s plans are and she tells that she is going to watch “Forbidden Planet” and Castle lies and says that he doesn’t know that movie and Beckett tells that they are going to it. Just like Castle wants it.
