The Dead Pool - Recap

The scene opens with a man training and he makes the lap in 20 seconds. He goes underwater for a moment but sees a man standing over him. Meanwhile, Castle talks to Alexis and Martha about how Alex Conrad, a new mystery author, is wanting to go to the station with him and see what he does. Alexis warns that Alex might be stealing Castle’s muse, but Castle doesn’t think so. Martha asks if Beckett knows about it and Castle says that she is going to be thrilled of the idea. However, when he gets to the murder scene, Beckett is not happy with it and says that another writer would get in the way. Castle talks her into it. They get up to Lannii and she tells that the victim is Zack Lindsey, a champion swimmer. She says that he was smothered with a chemical and left to drown. Castle and Beckett talk to the coach and he tells that Zack was going to be the next Michael Phelps. Brian Morris is Zack’s contender, but there was no bad blood. Esposito comes over and says that the night janitor says that he saw Zack with “Rocket” Rob Tredwyck.

They go to a photo shoot where Rob is being photographed with his gold medals. Beckett and Castle talk to him and he is devastated that Zack is dead. He says that Zack wanted to talk to him because he had just had the “talk” with his girlfriend meaning that he can’t take everyone with him to the top and that she took it pretty hard. He says that her name is Bridgett McManus and says that she was sounding like she was going to do something. Meanwhile, Lannii shows Zack’s mother his body and she talks to Captain Montgomery and says that she put him in the water when he was 2-years-old and he took to it like a fish. She says that Bridgett and Zack were an item and that he was going to make it. Castle and Beckett come in and Montgomery tells that the mother doesn’t think that Bridgett was a threat, but Ryan tells that her text messages don’t sound too good saying that she will kill him if he left her. Ryan says that Bridgett has 4 brothers and that could have happened. They all have records as well. Ryan says that they are bringing her in.

Bridgett meets with Beckett and Castle and says that she didn’t kill him, but says that there was something going on. She thought that he was cheating on her and so she followed him. He met with a guy and they were arguing back and forth. She gives a description of the guy to the sketch artist and Beckett says that the burns on Zack’s mouth came from Chlorine. Esposito says that Zach was paying part of his tuition and barely making ends meet. Esposito comes up and says that Zack’s apartment has been tossed. They arrive there and see that they didn’t find what they were looking for. Castle sees the poster move and looks behind it. He finds anabolic steroids. They take them to Lannii and she says that it is steroids, but Zack wasn’t taking it. She says that this drug has been rumored to be made in Eastern Europe. Castle suggests to Beckett that Zack was dealing. Ryan comes up and his clothing is a little torn and says that he talked to the brothers Irish man to Irish man. He says that

Esposito talks to his teammates and one of the swimmers tells that the drugs were there for another reason and Zack would never do that. Alex Conrad comes into the station and tells that he feels like he knows Beckett already. Alex says that if he was writing the story, the steroids would be the “red herring” and that the real killer is from the old neighborhood. Alex gives Beckett his number and says that he would love to talk with her later to talk about his new book. She agrees and asks if it is alright with Castle. He says that it is alright, but when he gets home later that night, it is not alright. He says that he is trying to steal Beckett from him and he removes the advertising from his website for Alex’s new book and puts his up. Martha says that he is overreacting. However, the next day when he goes into the station the next day, he sees that Beckett got a huge basket full of muffins from Alex, thanking her for last night. Ryan says that Zack’s prints match a car that was stolen and Castle realizes that Zack used his air pressure pump and dentist tool to break into the cars. Esposito says that Tommy Marcone, Zack’s friend growing up, was also part of the auto theft.

They go to a bar and find Tommy sitting down. He says that he had nothing to do with the murder of Zack and says that he was nowhere near the pool on the night he was murdered. Castle talks to the bartender and she says that everyone loved Zack including Tommy. She gives him the name of Jimmy Lennon. Esposito runs the name and it matches the sketch that they have. He has a big record and owns an auto repair shop. They enter the body shop and Jimmy tries to run. He is caught and questioned about the car. Castle sees a car with a vanity plate that says “SWM4GLD”. Beckett finds out that it belongs to Brian Morris and inside, they find an empty vial of the steroids in Brian’s car. They go back to the station and talk to Tommy Marcone again and he admits that he and Zack stole Brian’s car as retaliation to Brian trying to poison him and made him sick. Later, Beckett and Castle talk to Brian and his father with their lawyer and the lawyer tries to throw out the fact that they found the drugs and tries to show that Brian was nowhere near the pool and has video surveillance to prove it. However, Beckett tells that it could have been altered. He leaves and his father tells that his son is going to go to the Olympics and no one is going to stand in his way.

Castle, Beckett and Montgomery talk about how much money the Morris’s have and Castle suggests that the father hired someone to do the deed. Ryan says that he was looking at the savings account and he pulled out $25,000. They trace it down and find that Tommy had the money. He confesses that he blackmailed Brian and told him to pay the money or else. He posed as Zack to scare him even more. Zach’s mom comes in and says that Zach was all she had and they need to find the killer. Beckett and the rest of team look at the phone records and find that Brian’s dad called Dr. Rex Colabro after finding out of the steroids blackmailing. Castle gives him a “hypothetical” scenario and Dr. Colabro tells that a swimmer would have to drop out to avoid testing. Alex comes up and Castle asks if they are going out tonight. He says that they are and Castle tells that he is having his Poker night with some fellow writers. Alex is surprised that Castle is inviting him and cancels on Beckett. Later, they arrive at the poker night and the other writers give Alex a hard time for trying to be smart after writing one mystery novel. One of the writers gives Castle a clue and asks who loses the most. Castle knows who could have done it.

They next day, Beckett and Castle meet with Coach Rome and find out that he has been supplying Brian with the steroids that made him get past Zack. Beckett tells that they also know that he was kicked off as a coach in another school where he was giving steroids to another student there. They go to a pool where Rob Tredwyck is and tell that they know that he was using steroids back when he won all the medals and that he didn’t want Zack to talk. They say that is when he killed him to keep quiet. He turns around and is arrested. Later, Beckett tells Castle that Alex told her that Castle and his writer buddies gave him a hard time and Castle says that he was jealous that Alex was spending time with her. She tells that she is a one writer woman and that he doesn’t have to worry about Alex anymore. Ryan and Esposito come up and tell that they are going to take Alex up to the prison to give him research for his prison scene in his novel. Esposito asks if a dude can be a muse and they tell him that it is not weird. However, when he leaves, Beckett looks at Castle and they both agree that it is a little weird.
