To Love and Die in L.A. - Recap

The scene opens with Mike Royce crawling out of a building. A man with a gun walks out and shoots him. Lt. Montgomery and Castle are on scene when Beckett arrives. Montgomery tells her that they have it, but she says that she has seen a dead body before. Castle tries to talk her out of walking up to the dead body and she says that if it was her, Castle wouldn’t back away. Lanie tells Beckett that Royce got in from Los Angeles and that he has shot in the leg first before in the head. They find the gun. It is a throw away with evidence that there was a silencer. Lanie says that Royce had something in his pocket for Beckett. At the station, they find out that there was another person on the same flight as Royce with a fake name that got back on the plane to Los Angeles. Beckett asks to go to Los Angeles, but Montgomery says that she is too close to the case. She tries to tell that she isn’t, but Montgomery tells her no. She says that she has vacation days and will take them. She stats to leave and Castle follows. She says that she wants to be alone right now.


The next scene shows Beckett on a plane heading to Los Angeles. A stewardess comes up and tells her that she has been upgraded to first class. She walks up to find Castle there. He says that the studio has been bugging him to go to the set of his movie. She says that Castle can’t get in the way because she has no jurisdiction there in Los Angeles. He says that he will be with her and she says that they need to be under the radar. They get to Los Angeles and Castle rents a convertible. Beckett asks if this is under the radar and Castle says that it is. Castle says that the studio gave him a 2 hotel room suite for the time he is in Los Angeles and says that Beckett should stay with him. She says that she doesn’t want any funny business and Castle says that he wouldn’t dare. They get to the suite and there are roses and champagne. Castle says that he had that from before. Beckett says that she is ready to start investigation and gets up to leave. They get to Royce’s house and Castle asks if he was rich because the house is huge. They get buzzed in and Beckett and Castle meet Gene Simmons in the backyard and he says that Royce rents his guest house because he helps him out. He says that a girl left with Royce and gives them her pictorial. Violet Young is the girl that was with him.

Back at the station in New York, Ryan and Esposito find video footage from a street camera, but can’t really see his face. Beckett says that Violet’s agent told her that she is in a commercial at Zenith Studios. Castle says that is where they are shooting “Heat Wave”. They arrive there and the director meets Castle and says that it is an honor. Beckett says that she is going to Violet’s commercial shoot. Castle asks where Natalie is, the actress playing Nikki Heat. The director says that she is in Rehab. Castle meets the two actors playing the two detectives and they look exactly like Esposito and Ryan. Beckett comes up and says that Violet is not there and the actors ask if they are on a job and Beckett tells Castle that the cast is just creepy. Back in New York, Esposito kisses Lanie and asks about the bullets found in Royce and the bullets are dissolving. Back in Los Angeles, Castle is intrigued with the dissolving bullets and Beckett and Castle break into Violet’s home, but the house is empty. Beckett sees that Violet was following someone and that she has pictures too. Suddenly they hear something in the front. The police are there. Beckett and Castle sneak out but are stopped by the police.

They talk with Detective Kyle Seeger. Beckett tries to tell him what they are doing and he says that he has someone on the phone for her. It is Montgomery and he instructs her to go home immediately. She agrees. However, when they leave, Beckett tells Castle that they are not going anywhere and calls Ryan. He says that Esposito has something and she says that she has a photo of the killer. Beckett tells them to run facial recognition. Castle finds the man in the photo in Violet’s house. Charles Kelvin, the same man that Violet was studying. Beckett and Castle visit Charles on the beach and ask him about Violet. He says that he had a date with her and they play the recording that they found. Charles says that it is the password to the vault at his company. They run over there and find that the vault is empty. Castle finds a bullet and Charles says that is what was in there and Beckett asks if they are dissoluble and he says that they are and that is why it was scrapped from the military because they are unusable. However, Beckett tells Charles that someone wanted them to use.


Ryan walks up to Esposito and says that Violet’s ex-boyfriend let her stay but was gone this morning. The next person was a black guy with a bad attitude. Esposito thinks that he is the driver trying to go after Violet. He shows a sketch of the man. Meanwhile, Castle says that Violet is the innocent in this and that she went to Royce for help. That is why she went to New York with Royce, for protection. Beckett says that she can’t believe that she is never going to see Royce again. Castle says that he thought Beckett was going to be hard to figure out and thought that she is hot too. They look in each others eyes, but Beckett says that she needs to go to bed. She closes the door and then opens it again, but Castle goes to his room. The next day, Castle wakes up to find Beckett with a murder board that the manager brought up for her. She tries to figure out how the robbers got through the vault and out the back with a guard station. Detective Seeger shows up and asks what they are doing there still. Beckett says that she is enjoying her vacation. He leaves and Castle asks if it is a good idea to cut him out of it and Beckett says that they need to talk to Reggie Walsh, the guard on duty the night of the robbery.

Beckett has the actors drive around in their studio police car and Beckett takes Reggie to the studio. Castle pretends to be a detective and Reggie says that these guys offered him $500 to take a cigarette break and Reggie says that the black guy called the other guy Ganz. Castle says that they are done with the room and he tells Reggie welcome to Hollywood. Ryan pulls up the file on Russell Ganz. He is a violent rich man. Donald Mannis is an associate and the one driving the car. Castle talks to the manager of the hotel and he says that Ganz is by the poolside right now. Beckett has an idea and comes out of the pool in a revealing swimsuit. It gets Ganz’s attention and she says that she is looking for something that Ganz has. However, to prevent Ganz seeing by Ganz’s place, Ganz realizes that she is a cop and calls her Green. She goes up to Castle and pokes him. Castle says that he took a picture of Ganz’s last call list and Castle suggests that they call in Detective Seeger now. Back in New York, Montgomery asks if Ryan or Esposito has seen Beckett and they say that they haven’t. However, Montgomery can see past their lies and says that they just need to help out Beckett in any way.


At the hotel, Detective Seeger comes and wants to know why Beckett wants a favor. She says that they have burner phones but one belonging to Donald Mannis is still good and that they can call it. Meanwhile, Esposito and Ryan get to Violet and she apologizes for not going to the police. Suddenly Esposito sees Mannis and shoots him. Mannis’s phone rings and Esposito answers it. Beckett tells Esposito to ask Mannis where the deal is going on tomorrow. To get an ambulance called, Mannis gives up the location. The next day, Beckett, Castle and Seeger go to the drop and stop the men with the bullets. However, there is no Ganz. The driver of the van laughs, but Beckett sees a cigar that is lit. She looks around and finds him. She runs after him and shoots him in the leg. She is about to shoot him in the head, but double thinks it and allows for Ganz to get arrested. Later, Castle and Beckett get a plane back to New York and Beckett finishes the letter that Royce wrote telling her that Castle and her are good together and that she shouldn’t let her job stop her from being with Castle and that she should follow her heart. The episode ends.
