The scene opens with a woman running away from a rapist. He tackles her and gets on top of her. A man tells him to leave her alone and then cuts off the man’s hand off. He then slices the man in half. Meanwhile, Castle is making breakfast when Martha comes out in a costume. He asks about it and she says that it is for her Shakespeare class. Alexis is talking to Ashley on the phone and she says goodbye. She says that Stanford is beginning to look better every day. Martha says that she is going to register her next semester. Castle asks if she wants to finish school with her friends, but she tells him that she doesn’t want to. Martha asks if Castle is crying and he denies it and blames it on the onions. Becket calls and he goes to meet her. He admits that it just wasn’t the onions and he says that Alexis is growing up and he is not ready. Beckett tells him to let her go.

They arrive on the crime scene and Lanie says that the man was split in too by a sword. The rapist is Tyler Ferris and Maureen Marcado is the victim of Tyler’s aggression. Maureen says that she doesn’t know what the killer looked like, but it is clear that she is hiding something. Beckett says that they need to talk to the next of kin. They have Tyler’s mother come in and she tells them that these things happen. They are confused and Tyler’s mother says that he was a two-bit loser. Ryan and Esposito look up names of people that Tyler was calling and one name, Tony Valtinni, comes up. Ryan says that he knows Valtinni and says that he is mobbed up. He says that Tony’s nickname is Tony “The Butcher”. Castle and Beckett talk to Tony and he says that he didn’t kill Tyler and accuses a Vigilante of doing it. He says that the guy cut him with his sword and drops his pants to show them. Tony says that he has cameras and says that he caught him on video.
Beckett, Castle, Ryan and Esposito watch the tapes and see that their killer is a “superhero” as Castle calls it. Beckett takes the photo to Gates and she tells that they are tracking the killer to other enemies of Tony and Tyler. Gates tells her to check Bellview and says that they probably admitted him before. Beckett comes out of the office and Castle tells her to skip Bellview. He says that the killer is not crazy and says that he probably made the costume himself. Castle says that they need to think comic book way. Beckett says that can’t be right. Ryan comes up and says that the costume is an original, but the sword is a samurai sword. Esposito comes up with a picture of a possible suspect and Castle shows that he knows who the killer is. He shows a board with different comic books. He says that the killer took from several comic heroes that all are driven by the death of a loved one or family member. Captain Gates comes out and finds Castle’s theory comical. However, Castle says that the suspect can be found in a comic book store.
Beckett and Castle go to the store and Beckett tells Castle to tone it down when around Gates. He says that he is going to solve the case. They get in the store and the store clerk is in awe with Castle coming in. They ask if they have seen their man in the photo and he says that he doesn’t. However, when they show a picture of the masked Vigilante, the clerk pulls up an online comic of the superhero. Castle remembers seeing a knuckle bead in the alley. Meanwhile, Esposito gets news about someone purchasing a samurai sword at a pawn shop. Castle and Beckett go to the alley and they find the piece from the costume. There is a partial print. However, they are interrupted by the Vigilante and he gets the piece and runs off. Esposito calls and says that they know who the killer is and he says that his name is Chad Hotkin. Castle and Beckett bust into the Vigilante’s house and find him in costume. They take him to the station and Gates doesn’t want to do anything more with this case and says that Beckett needs to get a confession. They meet with him and he tells that he doesn’t know what they are talking about and he says that he is not the real Lone Vengeance.

Beckett tells Gates that they don’t have the killer and she tells that she already told the Mayor that they had him. Beckett says that she shouldn’t have done that and Gates bites back that she shouldn’t have betted on Beckett. Later that night, Castle looks at the Lone Vengeance comics and Alexis comes in and says that she wants Castle to be supportive. He is until he hears that she is taking Ashley’s classes. Castle tells her that she needs to take classes that she wants to take and not the ones that Ashley is taking. Alexis takes the offensive and says that this was her idea. Castle sees something in the comic and runs over to Beckett’s. He says that they are not looking at all the details. He says that writer of Lone Vengeance is the actual Lone Vengeance. At the station, Beckett says that Sean Elt is not a real person and Castle says that it is an anagram of Stan Lee. Ryan and Esposito show more of the comics and line up the crimes. They see that the killing was personal.
Beckett and Castle meet with Tyler’s mother again and she recalls Tyler talking to a guy and saying that he know who he was. They realize that the man she describes is the reporter Paul Whittaker. Castle starts to talk about the motive and Ryan tries his hand at Castel-esk type of theory. They feel that Paul killed to hide his identity. They get a call to where Paul is and find him trying to sell his comic book collection. They arrest him and take him into custody. Gates tells Beckett that she is going to tell the Mayor that they have the killer. They talk to Paul and based on the details, they realize that he is not really the killer and that it is someone else. They look at the location more closely and realize that there is a project that has electricity going to the apartment. They get to the place and find samurai swords in a false wall. Esposito radios that someone is coming up the fire escape. The Lone Vengeance comes in and Beckett tells him to take off the mask. It is Officer Hastings, a police officer of their own.

Beckett talks to Hastings and asks why she killed Tyler. However, she says that she never did that and that someone is trying to frame her. Beckett believes her and she and castle start to think. They suspect Tony “The Butcher” again and bring him in the station. They tell him that they found a partial print and it belongs to Ernesto “The Tailor”. He admitted making you a Lone Vengeance costume. Tony asks for a lawyer. Officer Hastings is set free and Beckett tells her not to allow the death of her father hinder her work as a police officer. Castle watches and says that it is just like them. However, when they see Hastings and Whittaker kiss, Castle says that he is going to leave. Later that evening, Castle comes home to find Alexis there. She says that she has decided that taking the same classes as Ashley was dumb and that she is going to pick her own classes. Castle is happy and says that they still will see each other and Alexis tells him that she is moving in with Ashley. The episode ends.
