Originally based on the Dutch series, Big Brother
headed to the UK on Channel 4 in 2000. Proving a massive success a spin-off featuring celebrity housemates was launched in March 2001 in aid of Comic Relief. and was broadcast on both BBC1 and Channel 4. The first series lasted a full week and raised over £500,000 for the charity. Since then any money made from the show's phone lines goes directly to charity.
The format of the show see's the celebrity housemates living in a confined space together for a lengthy duration of time, competing in tasks with no access to the outside world. Nominations take place for the housemates and people are evicted until eventually we are left with a winner.
Winners of previous series are Jack Dee in 2001, Mark Owen in 2002, Bez in 2005, Chantelle Houghton in 2006, Shilpa Shetty in 2007, Ulrika Jonnson in 2009, Alex Reid in 2010, Paddy Doherty in 2011, Denise Welch in the first series of 2012 and Julian Clary in the second series of 2012. Rylan Clark won the first series of 2013 and Charlotte Crosby won the second series of 2013. Jim Davidson won the first series of 2014.
Davina McCall hosted the show when it originally aired on Channel 4 and Marcus Bentley narrated. However in 2011, the series moved networks to Channel 5 and Brian Dowling took over as presenter. Brian was replaced in 2013, by Emma Willis. Since the move to Channel 5, two series a year have been broadcast, this will continue at least until 2014 when the current contract runs out.
