The bar gang tries to show Diane how U.S. savings bonds are a good investment.
The series begins as an over-educated Diane Chambers enters the Cheers bar with her fiance/boss, Literature Professor Sumner Sloane, for a quick drink while he makes a phone call to get his mother's wedding ring from his ex-wife. But when Sumner goes to his ex-wife's house to get the family ring for Diane, his relationship with her gets rekindled. Upon his return, he tells Diane that he has no intention of leaving her, and returns once more to get the ring he was supposed to get the first time. This time, he ends up taking his ex-wife to the Barbados to get (re)married, abandoning Diane without a word.
A crushed Diane is left jobless, with few prospects, and finds that a waitress job at Cheers may be the right thing for her.
After Diane mocks Sam's many female conquests for their lack of intellect, Sam sets out to prove he can attract intelligent women, too. Meanwhile, a long-past patron of the bar comes looking for advice from one of the former owners. Since that owner is long-since passed away, it falls to Coach Ernie to render advice.
Carla loses her temper after a Yankees fan begins to insult Sam, and she attacks him. Now the fan plans to sue Sam and take the bar away unless Carla can learn to control her temper.
A local big shot newscaster asks to interview Sam, which boosts his ego, but Diane doesn't think that agreeing to put himself on television is a good idea.
Coach's daughter comes to Boston with some big news, she's getting married! But the man of her dreams turns out to be an obnoxious moron. Coach doesn't have the heart to tell her, which causes a strife in their communications.
An old friend of Diane's comes to visit her on the rebound of her latest loss at love. Diane becomes upset with Sam after he tries to hit on her friend.
In order to kiss up to the boss Norm takes on the planning the annual office party and of course holds it at Cheers. But in order to make this night complete he will need to find his boss a date...I wonder where Diane is.
Diane insists that she and Carla stay after closing to settle their differences once and for all, but one too many drinks makes Carla reveal the startling "truth" about her youngest child.
Coach gets a thing for his new neighbor but after Sam see's her he also gets his eyes on the prize.
One of the Red Sox players comes into the bar and is very frustrated with a slump he is in. He asks Sam for advice, and Sam brings up his lucky charm - a bottle cap. The baseball player wants to borrow it for luck, and Sam is very protective about it, but ends up letting him borrow it. Sam is very upset when the player does not return it within the promised time period.
Diane begins to keep notes on conversations of the bar; in the meantime a man who is about to join the monastery stops by the bar and after a few drinks reveals some deep secrets about his life, as the gang tries to cheer up an old WWI veteran whose buddies seem to have missed their reunion.
A mysterious quiet fellow enters the bar and doesn't say a thing all day; which makes the gang believe he is a secret agent.
Sam allows the public spotlight to get to his head and turns into a TV pitchman.
After Diane's cat dies she turns to her bar friends looking for help, but ends up very dissapointed when they ignore her for the Celtics game.
Carla is pregnant...again, and lets another man believe he is the father because he is smart and could provide for her.
The bar regulars fear the bar may turn into a "gay bar" after one of Sam's old teammates reveals his homosexuality.
Sam and Diane make a bet that they can find each other dates within the next 24 hours. Diane finds the perfect date for Sam, but Sam thought Diane was talking about being Sam's date when they made the contest. He ends up finding a man at the bar in the pool room, and pays him to be Diane's date. Little does Sam know, the guy he paid to take Diane out was an ex-criminal.
Sam enters Diane into the Bar Maid contest. Diane has no idea, she sees her picture in the paper. She threatens to quit, until she finds out that the newspaper and radio shows will be giving interviews to the winner. She stays in the contest, only to win, thinking she will explain how Bar Maid contest are absurd and disrespectful to women. This all backfires on her when she wins, and gets to go to Bermuda.
After Coach is cheated out of a lot of money Sam turns to Harry (the conman) to help get it back.
Diane's mother shows up at Cheers with some bad news: If Diane doesn't marry before the next day her mother will lose the share of Diane's father's estate.
Sam's "perfect" brother show's up at the bar and impresses everybody, including Diane. Sam now feels left in the shadows.
Diane's relationship with Sam's older brother continues to grow until he shockingly asks her to move back to Paris with him.
The Cheers regulars are finding it hard to adapt to Sam and Diane's new relationship. Diane is also having problems with this, which easily shows after she kicks Sam out of her apartment only after 5 minutes of him arriving.
Carla goes into labor at the bar, and her sister comes to fill in for her at the bar. She begins to become interested with all the guys at the bar, espically Cliff. Cliff decides he wants to marry her, but doesn't know that she's been fooling around with every other man at the bar. Norm ends up telling Cliff it isn't a good idea for him to marry Carla's sister.
Diane wants to go to a speech at a college, but in order for her to do so, she needs to change schedules with Carla. Diane sweet talks Sam into convencing Carla that switching one night with her wouldn't be that bad. Carla refuses to make her point, that Diane gets away with things more than the rest of them would. Diane thinks this is interfering with their relationship, so she quits her job at the bar, and goes on the search for a new job. She comes back in a few weeks with a job at a publishing house. Diane has told Sam that her boss wanted to talk with him, to ask him a few questions about Diane, but the questions her new boss askes Sam are far from professional. Diane gets up-set that all the job offers she has gotten, all had sexual strings attatched.
Andy Andy is back in action. He comes into the bar, harmlessly asking for a drink, then the next thing you know, he's pointing a gun at the bar, demanding all the money in the cash register. They soon find out that Andy isn't a bad person at heart, and that his dreams are to become an actor. Diane decides to help Andy with his dreams, and does a scene from a play infront of her old college professor. While getting ready before the performance, Andy see's Diane and Sam kiss. He becomes angry and actually trys to strangle Diane in the scene they do together.
Sumner comes back to Cheers, hoping to win Diane back. But he fails miserably as Sam reads 'War and Peace' to impress Diane. Diane soon has to choose between Sumner and Sam. She chooses Sam, of course!
A man named Hank comes into Cheers, and becomes interested in Carla. Diane thinks it's sweet, so she decides to help out, and convinces Carla that he's not that bad. She agrees to go out with him, until she finds out what's wrong with him. After a few dates, things seem to be going well, until Carla dumps Hank for no aparent reason. Diane and Sam soon find out that Carla was right. Hank has a serious heart condition and too much excitement could kill him.
One of Sam's old friends, Dave, comes into the bar hoping to get the old, skirt chasing Sammy Malone back. But what Dave doesn't know is that Diane and Sam are going together. When Dave finds this out, he makes a bet that he can break them up in the next 24 hours.
An old friend of Sam's comes into Cheers, hoping to get Sam as a coach for his little league baseball team. Sam tells his friend that he's been too busy with the bar and Diane. Coach comes up with the idea for him to be the coach of the baseball team, and Sam thinks it's a wonderful idea. But Diane on the otherhand, does not. She thinks that sense Coach was use to training players in the Major League, she's afraid he'll drive the children away by making them work too hard.
Dick Cavett suggests to Sam that his autobiography might sell well on the market. So him and Diane get to work on it. Meanwhile an old flame of Vera's comes to town looking to win her back; it's up to Norm to confront him about it.
Diane gets Sam a pair of tickets to a fight Sam has been wanting to see. Sam is so happy, he blurts out the phrase, 'I love you'. Diane takes it seriously and is totally taken back by what Sam had said. Diane goes to tell Sam that what he told her really made her happy, and he thinks nothing of it. Diane then proposes that they think about their relationship. If neither one of them can come up with an explination as to why they are together, Diane thinks they should call it quits. A week later, Sam and Diane still can't figure out what their relationship means, and Sam can't bring himself to tell Diane that he loves her sense he used the phrase so casually.
One of Diane's friends, Heather Landen, comes to Boston for a visit. Diane brings her over to the bar and introduces her to everyone. Heather is very nice to everyone at the bar, espically Sam. Sam starts to worry that Heather is getting a little too friendly, and warns Diane about it. Diane thinks Sam is just over reacting, and invites Heather to dinner with her and Sam. Once things start getting a little too friendly at Diane's apartment, Diane loses it and confronts Heather about it. Heather explains she's just a friendly person and her intentions were to make friends and not steal her boyfriend.
A man comes into Cheers, who only has 6 months to live, and who is oddly rich. Diane and Sam comfort him and talk to him. Sam lets him work behind the bar, since it's something he's always wanted to do. When it's time for him to leave, he leaves a will which says that Sam gets all of his money. Everyone starts to fight over the money, and Diane convinces Sam to destroy the will, because it's making everyone go crazy.
Nick comes into the bar with his new Fiance. Carla is desperate to find somenoe to go to the wedding with her to show Nick up. She begs Sam, and Sam and Diane agree. When Nick sees Sam and Carla together, he secretly now wants her back. Sam and Carla go to the wedding, and have a great time. Later that night, Nick comes back into the bar and kisses Carla, hoping it will make some sparks between them again.
Norm is officaly out of work, and is desperate to find a new job. He's been working as a dish washer, when he can get a much better job. Diane comes up with the great idea to have Norm as Sam's accountant. Sam is a little protective over his money, and doesn't think it's a good idea to do business with friends. Diane convinces Sam to hire Norm and he does. But, when Norm finds out Sam had never fired his old accountant, things get a little rough in their friendship.
Diane and Sam are spending a romantic evening together, when Coach barges in on them. Diane and Sam are desperate to find Coach his own girlfriend so they can have time for themselves, but the plan backfires when Diane and Sam have to admite that the reason they set Coach up with somebody is that they don't want him hanging around them so much.
Cliff doesn't get along very nicely with a man that comes into the bar. He pushes it far enough to where he wants to fight Cliff. Cliff, being the coward he is, trys to back out of it. But when it's time to face the music, Cliff shows them some of his fighting skills that he doesn't have, and ends up asking Diane to bring him to the hospital.
Coach has ordered yet another item from a con man. It's a weight telling fortune machine. Carla is spooked by the machine when everyone's fortune comes true. Diane doesn't believe in it, until she gets a fortune that relates to her and Sam.
Sam wants to go on a ski trip with his old friends, and tells Diane that his uncle died so he could go up to Vermont without her knowing. Carla trys to convence Diane that it's just a bluff so Sam could leave. Diane starts to believe Carla and confronts Sam.
One of Coach's old friends die. He's so upset, he wants to have a funeral in Boston for him. Sam doesn't think it's a good idea, but doesn't tell Coach. Instead, he tells Diane that Coach's friend had an affair with his wife. Coach over hears the conversation, and becomes furious.
After an attractive new client begins to seem interested in Norm; the gang tries to get him to pursue her.
Sam is asked to pose in a magazine as an eligible bachelor and agree's to. Diane is offended by this (because they are dating right now) and does not take it lightly. Meanwhile, Semenko, a famous artist, has stumbled into Cheers and wants to make Diane the subject of his artwork.
After seeing the half done portrait of Diane Sam forbids her from posing for him ever again. But of course, Diane will not take this obnoxious order.
After Diane leaves Cheers for a "vacation" Sam reverts back to his old ways of drinking. Coach hates to see him this way, because he remembers what it was like the first time. So he turns to Diane for help.
Dr. Frasier Crane, a doctor recommended by Diane, helps Sam return to the path of soberness once again. But now Diane, who has taken her job back, must tell Sam that she is "involved" with the doctor.
Fraiser turns to Sam for help about his intimate relationship with Diane. Meanwhile, Cliff must stay undercover to avoid a vengeful fellow postal employee.
Cliff meets a woman at the Costume Party at Cheers who he really likes, and she even likes him back. But after the night ends he is afraid to see her again without the mask.
After Sam enters the bar with a gun shot to the butt everyone wants an explanation. So he makes up a fake story about an elaborate scheme which lies only grow bigger and bigger as the story moves through the grapevine. All to avoid the real truth that he was shot by a jealous husband.
Coach meets a beautiful woman who agree's to marry him. Meanwhile, Sam tries to score with her daughter but can't seem to make the date.
The wedding is set, and everyone's excited. That is until Irene (coach's fiance) wins the lottery and dumps him. When Coach refuses to believe that it has really happened the gang worries he is in a state of denial.
Diane meets Frasier's mother for the first time, who "casually" tells her she will kill her if she doesn't leave Fraiser alone.
Nick, Carla's scumbag of an ex-husband, returns demanding a more equal division of the marital properties. Namely he wants one of the kids, a demand to which Carla actually agree's.
Diane moves in with Fraiser and begins to suffer from a mysterious allergy, which Fraiser believes is a subconsciencious sign that they are not ready to live together.
After an enlightening experience Norm gets an utter awareness of his own mortality. He decides to rid himself of all material possesions and move to Bora Bora. A small island free of all technological advancements where he will live in a hut and do hard labor. But will Norm really make it to Bora Bora?
Sam becomes attracted to one of Diane's friends, but she strongly insists he stays away. Which of course only makes Sam want her more. After their first date the girl already wants Sam to meet her parents, or who she calls him, "their future son-in-law".
Fraiser is highly disturbed to learn his trusted mentor has been dating Carla, who also has a suprise of her own: she's pregnant.
Diane insists the gang include Fraiser in their "Masculine Pursuits". So they take him on a "snipe" hunt in the woods and leave him there as a prank. Which doesn't go well.
Sam agree's to be the pitcher for a charity softball game against Playboy bunnies, but being back on the mound brings back his competitive self and he strikes them all out.
Sam and Coach both agree to take a night school class in geography. But when class begins, they do things a little different. While Coach is studying hard for A's, Sam is dating the teacher.
Cliff is a little too ill to finish his mail route so Norm does it for him and gets arrested because of it. But Cliff's pride and fear of losing his perfect discipline record makes him refuse to back up Norm's explanation to the cops.
An old friend of Sam's returns to the bar with some interesting news. He reminds Sam of an old bet, which stated that if Sam didn't marry Jacqueline Bissett before a certain date he would have to give the bar up.
Sam tries to hit on a lady who works as an investigator for the Boston singles scene; too bad she has heard every line in the book.
Nick, Carla's ex-husband, comes to Cheers begging for her to take him back after Loretta kicks him out of the house.
Norm becomes the "company hatchet man" after the boss realizes he has a nack for letting people go nicely. But how long can Norm keep this brutal job up?
Sam throws Diane a going-away party after she announces she will be leaving to acompany Fraiser to Italy for a while.
Carla insists that Sam higher an older woman to replace Diane to avoid the love factor, which Sam does. But he can't control his attraction to her young daughter, a factor Carla didn't add in.
Carla rounds up all of her former classmates from "St. Clete's School for Wayward Girls" to plot a long awaited revenge to an old principle she spots drinking at Cheers.
While in Italy, Fraiser proposes to Diane. She calls Sam hoping he will talk her out of it, but says yes after Sam doesn't answer...because he is on the way to Italy to bring Diane back.
After Coach's death, Sam hires a new bartender in Woody Boyd who was Coach's pen pal. Frasier arrives back from Europe after Diane left him at the altar. He tells them that she had six months of decadent living across Europe and is now seeking renewal in a Boston monastery.
Woody's old girlfriend comes to Boston to visit him. Frasier decides to pay his bar bill by working as a janitor.
After Diane fantasizes about the owner of a coat left at Cheers, Sam pressures her to ask the coat's owner for a date no matter who the owner turns out to be. When the owner comes to claim the coat, Diane tries to wiggle out of her "dream date". Meanwhile, Norm and Cliff work together on a high school science project.
Carla worries that her son, Anthony, is contemplating getting married, even though he is still a teenager. She heads to Sam for help who tries to convince Anthony being a bachelor is far better than being a husband. Meanwhile, Diane has an interview with her former fiance, Sumner Sloane.
On a dark, stormy night, Diane awakens from a nightmare in which she fears that Andy Schroeder, the crazy date who once tried to strangle her, has escaped from the home for the criminally insane and is coming to kill her.
Although Sam would usually have no qualms over lending Diane money, especially a measly $500, that is until he witnesses he recent spending spree and that she has used the money to purchase a book.
Carla's ad in the personals has not been answered, so the guys decide to make up a man for her. Airline pilot Mitch Wainwright is created as a means of raising her spirits, but she becomes obsessed with the 'man.'
Norm and his neighbor's wife hire a private detective when they assume that their spouses are having an affair together.
Cheers and Gary's Olde Towne Tavern are set to compete in their first ever athletic competition against each other, and the guys discover that bowling is not up their alley. But they find a reluctant hero in Woody, who doesn't want to compete.
Cliff's father comes to Cheers to give him an important message, but Cliff is reluctant to identify himself to the man who left his family behind. Also, Sam is dating a woman with a brain, and tries to keep her from meeting Diane.
Sam is proud to be the subject of Diane's psychology paper for school titled, “Don Juan Syndrome,” until he realizes what an unflattering picture she has painted of him.
Woody has had a remarkable winning streak playing the Cheers football pool. So the gang convinces him to place a bet with a real bookie. But no one expected that he would bet all his life's savings on the game.
The gang convinces Sam to give something to the annual charity auction, and is devastated when no one bids on his authentic jersey. Meanwhile, Norm tries to impress a potential client and his wife, but soon realizes that none of them have anything in common.
After making a fool out of the gang at Cheers with her psychology-class experiment in paranoid behavior, it's Diane who may become a better case subject as she nervously awaits their revenge.
Frasier has been hitting the bottle hard since his break up with Diane, and Sam wants to help him, having been there himself. But Sam has no confidence in Diane's plan to restore Frasier's self respect.
Cliff finds himself in an unusual situation when he has two dates for the annual postman's ball. He asks Sam for advice when he needs to drop either Diane or Carla.
After Frasier is dumped by his date, Sam sets him up with a woman who "cannot say no" to anyone.
Norm has some dirt on the competition for a promotion at work, that could give him the position.
In an effort not to look old in front of the guys, Sam winds up giving himself a hernia, which he tries to keep secret.
After finding out that Calra's ex-husband is going to compete in a dance contest with the younger Loretta, Carla tries to enlist Sam as her partner.
Sam and Diane find themselves in a matter of life-and-death when the pilot, Diane's ex-boyfriend, dies during the trip.
The guys at the bar feel bad for always shutting out Diane from their activities and decide to attend anything she chooses...which happens to be an opera.
Sam has decided to become the host/manager of Cheers, and therefore will need to hire a new bartender. But after the idea fizzles out, Woody fears he may lose his job.
Sam falls for city councilwoman Janet Eldridge, as she stepped into Cheers to campaign. A jealous Diane decides to join her opponents side, believing she is out to steal Sam away and then dump him after the election. Frasier joins the opposition too, in hopes of getting Diane back.
Diane feels even more jealous now that Janet and Sam's relationship has grown stronger. Janet believes Sam needs to cut all ties to his past, which means he must fire Diane, a conversation she overheard. But Diane beats him to the punch and quits. Meanwhile, Norm fears that Vera's visiting sister will once again try and seduce him like she did on her last visit.
Janet has won the election and gathers the press to Cheers to give a speech. Diane shows up and fires a few fastballs by he in the form of questions, causing Sam to remove her from the bar. Janet has been pressing Sam for a marriage proposal, but seeing a lack of commitment in his actions, decides to dump him. This causes Sam to call someone on the phone and propose. Meanwhile, mush to his fears, Vera is called away leaving he and Donna alone.
Sam becomes frustrated when Diane refuses to accept his marriage proposal over the telephone, and then agrees to meet her for a romantic evening and then still rejects him.
Since Diane said no to his wedding proposal once too often, Sam says he will never ask her again. He brags that he has set up a romantic weekend with another woman at Cape Cod, which entices Diane to follow him. Although alone, Sam won't mention that his date has returned home early.
Cliff makes plans of becoming a rich man someday by introducing his mom to a rich bar patron. But the man explains that when he dies, he's leaving all his money to charity.
Diane helps Frasier and Dr. Lillith Sternin get together after noticing a chemistry between the two. Meanwhile, Woody invites Norm and Cliff to a fishing trip, which they reluctantly attend.
Carla buys a new house and later discovers it is on top of a 17th century prison graveyard. So Cliff is recruited to spend the night there to prove there is nothing to fear.
Norm gets the whole gang involved when he invests in a combination laundry and tanning salon.
Woody becomes obsessed with creating a new drink. After many failures he hits a tasty new concoction...now if he can only remember the ingredients. Meanwhile, Diane and her new beau have reservations at a new "in spot" of Boston, named The Cafe. Sam believes he should bring his latest date there also.
Sam becomes jealous when Diane announces that she has been doing some part-time teaching and one of her students is in love with her. Also, Cliff wants to join the Knights of the Scimitar, an exclusive lodge. He also wants the gang to join but only Norm agrees, in hopes of making new business contacts. But a rule will keep him from doing so.
Diane invites everyone to Carla's home for a Thanksgiving dinner, only to wind up with a frozen turkey and burnt peas as their meal.
Diane receives a rejection letter from a literary magazine, touting her work as promising. Sam believes that he would receive the same letter if he sent a poem in to the same magazine. But when his work is accepted, Diane goes all-out to prove his poem was plagiarized.
After receiving a "Dear John" letter from Beth in the mail, Woody searches through Sam's legendary black book to find a woman to show off as his date.
Diane announces that she has been taking ballet lessons at a community college class with the world renowned Madame Lihkova. She must submit a video tape for her final exam, which the gang get a hold of and its harsh critiques. Frasier rewrites the message to something positive, which swells her head to the point of wanting to audition for the Boston Ballet.
Sam winds up in jail for assault and battery after proposing to Diane one more time.
Sam finds himself in a bind when Diane falls in love with an engagement ring costing $5,200. Norm suggest using his friend to make a fake ring for a fraction of the cost. But the pressure is too much for Sam and he buys the expensive ring, switching it before Diane finds out. After revealing his secret, Diane becomes so upset that she tosses the ring out the window...unaware that it's the real ring.
When Loretta catches Nick cheating on her, Diane and Carla come to her side for comfort. But when Sam stands up to Nick, he believes that Sam and Loretta are now a couple and vows to steal Diane away from him. Meanwhile, Frasier struggles in a game of chess against Woody.
Eddie Lebec, a recent addition to the Boston Bruins hockey club, falls for Carla. Meanwhile, Diane is named foreman of a murder trial and is sworn to secrecy, but spills the beans to anyone who will listen.
Eddie was the hottest goalie in hockey until he and Carla became an item. Meanwhile, the defendant in Diane's murder trial shows up at the bar.
Sam and Diane decide to allow each other one last fling for 24 hours before their wedding day, but neither take advantage of the situation.
Diane asks for some time away to visit a Buddhist monastery to get her life straightened out. Meanwhile, Cliff is all set to sue the owner of a dog which left him with a bite on his leg, but gets cold feet after seeing the voluptuous beauty.
Frasier shocks the gang by announcing he has asked Lilith Stern to move in together, and invite Sam and Diane over for dinner. Elsewhere, Carla enlists Cliff to watch over her children while away with Eddie.
Diane pleads for Frasier's friend, a noted marriage therapist, to take them in for a session, then refuses to use his suggestions.
Joyce Pantusso, Coach's daughter and Sam's goddaughter, has come to Boston for a visit. Sam asks Woody to keep her busy so she won't become bored. But when they come back to Cheers, they give the shocking news that they want to move in together.
Norm lands a job at a prestigious Boston CPA firm, but overdoes his importance to the firm with the gang. So when they come to surprise him at work he becomes caught in a lie. Meanwhile, Woody loses a $20 bill and Cliff just happens to have found one.
Woody finds out that his parents fear his safety in Boston and ask him to return to Indiana. So the gang decide to film a short movie showing the life that he leads each day in hopes of changing their minds.
Sam and Diane find their dream house, but after hearing the story of the elderly couple who live there now, Diane doesn't have the heart to move in.
Sam and Diane's wedding day has finally arrived, as has Dr. Sumner Sloane, along with the news that a producer is interested in one of her manuscripts, but needs to make some changes immediately.
Six months has passed since Diane left Sam at the alter. Sam had since sold the bar to a corporation and bought himself a sailboat where he had been living until it sank. Now he's returned to Cheers and is looking for a job.
Sam gets the chance to fill-in for his old buddy on TV for a week as a sportscaster on the evening news. But to do so he must dodge his duties at Cheers.
Eddie proposes to Carla and wants her to meet his mother. The get together is a disaster when she takes an immediate disliking to Carla and wants the wedding called off. Elsewhere, Rebecca nervously awaits the arrival of her boss.
It's up to Sam to get Carla and Eddie back together after Eddie's mother did not approve of his choice of brides.
Having had a fallout with Lilith, the gang tries to convince Frasier that Rebecca wants him. Meanwhile, Rebecca removes Sam's picture and replaces it with one of her own.
After Norm is alerted by Rebecca how much his bar tab has amassed, he works it off by painting her office for her.
Cliff's mom is ready to sell their family home to a developer who wants to build a convenience store on the site. Meanwhile, after discovering Rebecca's college nickname, "Backseat Becky," the gang want to learn how she got the name.
Sam and Woody participate in a charity auction but are not too happy after finding out who bought them.
