• What's Delaying Chuck? |
With fans frustrated over the lack of an official announcement on Chuck's renewal yet, the question remains, what's the hold up?
Last weekend, DeadlineHollywoodNews.com's Nikki Finke, who is usually right about such things, said NBC had in fact renewed Chuck, Law & Order and Medium, and would be announcing those renewals at the Infront. That announcement did not happen, but numerous sources say Medium has indeed been renewed, while Finke reiterates that NBC has been "privately telling insiders" that Chuck, Medium and Law & Order are coming back.
So why the delay in making announcements? Finke has reported on some of the complicated behind the scenes negotiations that have been delaying these shows making their final deals.
In the case of Chuck, Finke says the show has become intertwined in a situation involving NBC and Warner Bros (who produce Chuck) over an otherwise unrelated project – the pilot for Legally Mad, produced by David E. Kelley (Boston Legal). NBC have passed on the project, apparently not being very happy with the pilot – but Finke notes that means NBC has to pay a $2 million penalty to Warner Bros. While this is not usual for all pilots, it is sometimes tied to a project with a producer as big as Kelly. Says Finke, "NBC is hoping to work a deal tying the renewal of Chuck, which is also a WB show, to a pass on paying that Legally Mad penalty."
