The episode deals with the McCarthy era or "Red Scare" of the 1950's. Many people like the main character were labeled communist because of civil rights issues and not because of true membership or desire to be part of communism. It is a fact that Communist organizations for one reason or another were fighting for equal rights of minorities, women, and workers but most people simply wanted their equal protection under the law and had no desire to be part of a Communist government.
