Simon and Rachel appear to be in the middle of a good relationship until Simon let's her know that he is off to Hong Kong, and he doesn't want extra responsibilities.
Adam is depressed about yet another failed relationship, but then literally runs into Rachel (cars bump in the car park). Rachel writes her number on the back of his car, but soon it rains, and Adam loses her number. Adam stakes out the grocery store car park to try to find Rachel.
Pete and Jenny Gifford are trying to become pregnant, while Karen and David Marsden are trying to raise a baby without help. Karen really wants to hire a nanny, but David refuses to have his child raised by some strange woman.
Adam and Rachel are planning to move in together (nine months after starting their relationship), but are having some problems deciding on where to live. Karen is overworked trying to take care of the baby more or less alone (David is always working) and is disappointed in David's response to the issue. Meanwhile, Jenny is pregnant and almost due to deliver and Pete has gone a little overboard in attempting to plan the big moment (maps, cell phones, etc.).
While wandering around their new dwelling, Adam comes across a marriage certificate. At first he thinks that it is a joke, but eventually he realizes that Rachel had been previously married, and is in fact still married. While Jenny and Pete's new child influencing him, David decides that he would like to add a second child to his family (David and Karen's family).
With the child born, Pete is eager to resume marital relations with Jenny, but is finding it difficult to get these relations restarted. Meanwhile, David and Karen also find themselves with some problems in the bedroom. Rachel's friend Karen and Adam's friend Pete note their particular problems, which cause both Rachel and Adam to develop problems of their own.
Pete's quite annoyed, his annoying parents visit. Karen has returned to work to help pay for the new nanny (and have some adult conversation), but runs into some trouble with an author while helping him with a book. While Karen is out of town helping an author with his book, David falls into the wrong bed at home. And all this talk of books reminds Adam of his attempted novel. He digs it out and attempts to continue it.
Jenny and Pete need some time away from the baby, so Rachel offers her services to babysit. David and Karen's marriage is in trouble, so they visit a marriage counselor. Pete and Adam end up clubbing, but become entangled in some illegal drug activity.
David and Karen invite their two friend-couples (Adam & Rachel; Pete & Jenny) to a very fancy dinner party held by David's company. Jenny becomes drunk, and Rachel becomes pregnant (or finds out she is pregnant).
