How is it possible to assemble a good cast of actors, pick an experienced director (John Cassar, of 24 and The Kennedys), and blow it this badly? Showcase’s Continuum actually seems designed to have no future. For example, you might expect this show to be targeted to a young male audience. Apparently not, for the producers decided to make series star Rachel Nichols’ character married, a mom, and a preachy bitch who hassles a pair of young men on a subway and injects one of them with a torture device. Oh, and she’s an enforcer for a dictatorship, fighting against liberty and democracy. For the young female audience, the character’s marital status and motherhood precludes any romantic tension with male characters. And for anyone looking for a good time, the series is humorless and violent, though nobody is able to shoot straight. So this is a show that will appeal to only one group: Republicans. If you’re a member of the 1%, you can thrill to the idea that, one day, corporations will rule our lives and you can root for the woman who will make it happen.
