Lacey tries to improve everyone's minds by starting a book club in Dog River. She needs people to fill the chairs, and bribes Brent to join the club, thinking that she'll be able to control him. Brent surprises her by actually reading the books and having opinions that carry some weight with the other members. Brent has other problems as well: a comedian uses a joke on national TV that he stole from Brent, and in return for his membership in the book club, Brent gets Lacey to help him put the comedian to shame.
