A blonde woman is sleeping and a deformed hand appears, grabbing a lock of her hair before letting go and producing a knife.
Elle and Morgan talk about their two-week vacation at a friend's resort. Morgan tries to persuade Reid to join them but he declines. Hotch is excited at having two weeks off and doing nothing but household chores and spending time with the family. Gideon will be spending his vacation at a cabin in the woods.
Pictures of each member of the BAU team are spread out on a table as a deformed hand puts down a glass to answer the phone. After taking the call, the man flicks a switch and tells the blonde woman from earlier, who is chained to a bed, that he has to leave and that it will be all over soon. She screams and tries to break free from her chains to no avail.
Elle and Morgan are sunning themselves at the resort in Jamaica when Morgan's friend, Gerald Dupree, arrives and greets them. Morgan spots a beautiful woman on the beach and goes after her to introduce himself. A frisbee lands near Elle and a man apologises before inviting Elle to play with them and she agrees.
Hotch is going through some boxes and finds a pirate hat from his one and only appearance on stage. His wife, Haley, reminds him he should be dumping things not keeping them. She says he can keep it if he comes up with a good reason to by the end of the day.
Gideon is dancing around in his kitchen as he prepares a meal. He opens the cupboards to reveal four monitors that show a car approaching the cabin.
Garcia enjoys an online role-playing game on her computer. JJ walks in and Garcia tells her all about 'Sir Kneighf' who she meets regularly in the imaginary Camelot setting.
Reid watches over his mother at a Nevada sanitarium. He leaves a book for her and takes off saying he'll be back tomorrow.
Elle dances with the frisbee guy from earlier as Morgan appears with the woman he saw at the beach. They exchange a few words and enjoy themselves.
Hotch reminisces over how he met Haley, stumbling into a theatre rehearsal back in college.
Gideon enjoys his meal with his companion, Doris, and they dance to the music.
Hotch receives a mysterious call which ends with him being told the youngest holds the key and he must help him to save her.
Gerald Dupree steps out of an elevator with a bunch of policemen. There's been a murder and blood is on the walls. Dupree hands a key to a policeman who opens a door the blood has led to. Inside, there is blood everywhere and a dead body on the bed.
Garcia is playing her game when "game over" appears on the screen followed by "all work no play" that is repeated over and over. The same appears on all the other monitors in Garcia's office.
Gideon is kissing Doris when he notices a van driving towards the cabin. He grabs his gun, apologises to Doris and tells her to stay in the bedroom.
The policemen in Jamaica follow a trail of blood to another room with their guns drawn.
Gideon receives a package, it's a box with an envelope stuck on the top with the words "SAVE HER". A baseball card is inside the envelope.
The Jamaican policemen approach a room with blood splattered all over the door.
Gideon opens the box to reveal a severed head in plastic.
The Jamaican policemen open the door and grab a woman from her bed, handcuffing her as she's on the floor, kicking and screaming. It's Elle.
An FBI agent informs Gideon the package was sent from Jamaica but Gideon doesn't know anyone there.
Elle is interrogated by Detective St. Pierre who wants to know where the victim's head is. Elle has no idea, she's only in Jamaica for a vacation. He shows her a photograph with the words "SAVE HER" in blood on her hotel room wall.
Morgan is examining Elle's friend's room along with Detective Lindo. Dupree tells them the name of the man who rented the room and his friend who is in the adjoining room. Morgan kicks down the door but there's no sign of the friend, the room is empty. He calls Garcia for some info however she's too busy trying to fix her computers.
JJ informs Gideon of what's happened in Jamaica and that Hotch is on his way over there.
As Elle is being interrogated, Hotch enters the room and presents the findings on the body in the morgue. Time of death was no less than 24 hours - before Elle and Morgan had even arrived in Jamaica. Elle is released.
JJ finds a package on her desk - it's a rare butterfly with a sticker on it: "SHE HAS BEEN SEARCHED FOR YET NEVER FOUND".
Reid is visiting his mother again when a nurse says a package has been left for him - it's a key along with a note.
JJ shows her butterfly to Gideon. He's perplexed and wonders what the hell is going on.
The chained, blonde woman is coughing as she lies on her bed.
Hotch, Elle and Morgan arrive back at Quantico where the team discuss the clues they have so far and what each member has received. The unsub wants them to play his game. He knew things about the team from their childhood and where they'd be on vacation. Garcia, looking withdrawn, enters the room and reveals the hacker got all that information from the FBI database. It's possible he got into Garcia's laptop and from there into the FBI servers as she was playing her online game. Gideon is angry, Garcia has a responsibility to protect those information files. But it turns out that she has found him, his name is Frank Giles.
The team storm Frank Giles' apartment and find him dead on his bed with a sword in his chest. Written in blood on the wall is a message: "HERE THY QUEST DOTH TRULY BEGIN". There is another clue etched on the sword but it doesn't seem to make sense. Reid appears and explains the hour be none clue doesn't mean midnight, it actually means 3pm in medieval terms. As 3pm has already passed, they use a torch to see where the sword's shadow would be cast. A box is found hidden in the wall and Reid's skeleton key opens it. A note is found inside along with a CD and a lock of hair in a hidden compartment.
The BAU team watch the video on the CD of what appears to be an injured man. He talks about the quest the team must complete and there being only one rule - only members of the team can participate.
Gideon walks off, back to his office. Hotch follows and asks him what's wrong. Gideon says he has nothing left and wants to be left alone. Haley arrives to give Hotch an envelope that was said to be important. Hotch and Gideon question Haley on what the delivery man looked like.
Elle, Morgan and Reid work on the latest clue that Haley received. It's a piece of paper with a series of numbers on it. Reid figures them out to be book codes, each set of numbers being a page-line-word code. They just need the right book to decipher the message. JJ has the identity of the girl whose lock of hair they found - it's Rebecca Bryant and she's been missing for two years.
Gideon wants a sketch artist so they can draw up a face from Haley's description and make it public. Hotch reminds Gideon that the unsub wanted to keep this within the team but Gideon is adamant.
A press conference is called and JJ shows the sketch of the delivery man to the cameras. The unsub is watching and he flicks a switch to let Rebecca know he has to go out again.
Hotch wakes Elle who is sleeping on the couch. He orders her to go home and get some rest, the team aren't anywhere closer to figuring things out.
Elle walks into her house and sits down, placing her gun on the table. She closes her eyes before lying down and making herself comfortable. The unsub approaches with a gun pointed at Elle. He speaks and mentions the one rule they had to abide by and gets angry about the press conference. Elle pleads with him. The unsub gets angrier and begins to shake, he's about to pull the trigger and Elle knows she must act. She reaches for her gun and a gunshot goes off...
