JJ hands Gideon a folder saying the girl on the video has been identified as Rebecca Bryant. He puts on his glasses and starts to leaf through it.
Hotch, Morgan and Reid are trying to narrow down their search for the specific book they need. Morgan questions if the FBI really holds information about them in their database such as Gideon digging Nelly Fox. Reid reads the poem from the music box again - he thinks he's heard it somewhere before. The three of them are still stumped. Gideon enters the room and suggests they treat this like a normal case without all the clues. The first thing they'd do would be to look at the victim and find out as much as they can about them. Reid is left to work on the clues, if anyone can put this together, it's him.
As Hotch walks out into the main office area, he spots Anderson who he'd told to take Elle home earlier. He asks Anderson what he's doing here and explains that the unsub has their personal information including their home addresses and orders him to get back to Elle's house immediately.
Elsewhere, Elle is on a plane and the captain asks for a case file. Without a case file, Elle will have to get off. Meanwhile, paramedics are working on Elle who is unconscious on her floor and covered in blood. They manage to restart her heart and need to get her blood pressure back up or they could lose her again... permanently. On the wall, the word RULES is written in blood.
Reid tries to figure out the possible book title when there's thousands of books published every year.
Hotch is informed that the delivery guy they sought to find in the press conference is on his way up.
Reid explains to Gideon his theory that the book they're looking for has to be published in 1963. Nelly Fox holds significance to Gideon with regards to the year 1959 but the card that was sent to him was a 1963 card. Hotch tells Gideon and Reid the delivery guy that was at his house has turned himself in.
Hotch and Gideon question the delivery guy. He tells them a man handed him a package to be delivered a few miles and that a girl's life depended on it. They see through the facade and ask him how much money he was paid.
Reid and Garcia work on tracking down the hacker. Reid wonders if there's a master list of books published in the year 1963 but Garcia tells him that's highly unlikely. A search on the poem reveals it to be The Parliament Of Fowls written by Geoffrey Chaucer - a poem which had been read to Reid before by his mother. Reid runs through the clues in his head - something published in 1963, a butterfly indigenous to Great Britain... something born, something from Great Britain... medieval... Chaucer was middle English, the middle English spelling of the word fowls is fowles. Reid tells Garcia to look up a contemporary British author called John Fowles. He had a book published in 1963 - The Collector - which fits with baseball cards, skeleton keys, music boxes, things that are collected. The cover of the book shows a butterfly, skeleton key and a lock of blonde hair.
The delivery guy tells Hotch and Gideon the man who gave him money to deliver to Hotch's house was scarred, burned up. He's a burns victim. Reid informs Hotch and Gideon they've figured out the book they need and have four separate libraries looking for the 1963 edition published in Great Britain. A call has come through for Gideon, someone calling himself the Fisher King. Reid takes the notepad with the name and rearranges the letters to spell 'Sir Kneighf'. This could be the unsub they're looking for. Gideon takes the call and the unsub tells him there were rules. Gideon asks how he got the burns and the unsub responds by telling him that Elle did not have to die like that before hanging up.
Elle looks around a plane and finds her father sitting opposite to her. Meanwhile, doctors and nurses work on keeping Elle alive as she's wheeled down a hospital corridor. Hotch and Gideon arrive at the hospital where Anderson meets them and apologises. He's tearful as he explains what happened at Elle's house. It appears she dialed 911 herself before passing out. No-one knew her identity until Anderson got there because Elle's gun and ID had been taken. Hotch orders Anderson to go back to Elle's house to stop anyone touching anything.
One of the libraries has called Reid back. They have the book he's looking for so Reid reads the number codes for the page-line-word. Garcia writes each word on a whiteboard.
Hotch blames himself for what happened to Elle. He sent her home and he should've been more clear with Anderson. Gideon reassures him that it wasn't his fault and tells him to try calling JJ and Morgan again. He's tried three times already but Gideon asks him to try again - he doesn't want them to hear about this on the news.
JJ and Morgan are on their way to the girl's parents' house. From studying Rebecca Bryant's file, something doesn't seem right. Morgan asks JJ to see if she can get the detective who worked on the missing case to meet them at the house. She says she will as soon as they enter an area with cellphone service.
Reid and Garcia have finished writing a riddle from the number codes. Reid figures out that it may be about his mother and calls the Las Vegas field office to have them pick her up from her sanitarium and escort her to Virginia.
JJ gets off the phone with Hotch. Morgan jokes that Reid has probably figured it out already and they drove all this way for nothing. JJ gives the bad news to Morgan - Elle was shot by the unsub and is in surgery. Morgan slams the brakes and turns the car around but JJ insists there's nothing they can do at the hospital. Maybe they can find the unsub through the victim, Rebecca.
As the surgeons work on Elle, she flatlines. Elsewhere, she's talking to her father on the plane. She wonders what is going to happen to her and her father responds it's up to her.
Anderson returns to Hotch saying they managed to get a partial fingerprint from the blood on the wall and they're running it now.
Reid reveals to Garcia that everyone tells him their secrets and he writes to his mother about everything. He asks if she knows that schizophrenia is genetically passed.
JJ and Morgan have arrived at the Bryant house along with the detective who worked the case. As JJ and Rebecca's mother, Celia go off to make coffee, Morgan questions the detective. All of Rebecca's things have been packed away in the garage and that's not normal. Even when kids have been missing for a decade, their room still looks the same as it does the day that they left. It turns out that Rebecca was no angel and had run away a number of times before. Morgan learns that Rebecca is adopted as something had happened to her family when she was a little girl. It's revealed that her old surname was Garner.
The unsub brings a tray of food for Rebecca. She takes the tray and hits the unsub on the back of the head, screaming why he doesn't just kill her. He replies, "Because I love you too much, Rebecca."
Morgan calls Garcia and asks her to pull the file on Rebecca's adoption. It's sealed so Morgan asks Garcia to unseal it so they can find out what happened to Rebecca's family.
Hotch and Gideon admit they don't have enough to catch the unsub yet. Gideon tells himself that he did what he had to do and Elle will understand.
As the surgeons continue working on Elle, she is still talking to her father. She's scared and he assures her that she's in control of her fate.
Reid's mother, Diana, arrives and she's not impressed that she was forced to fly on a plane - the one thing that frightens her the most. Reid tells her to follow him as he has something to show her.
Garcia calls Morgan and tells him she found Rebecca's records along with some newspaper articles. It turns out that most of her family died in a house fire back in 1992. Rebecca was saved and her father tried to rescue the rest of the family but failed and suffered massive burns. He was also in a Las Vegas sanitarium for a few years.
Reid shows his mother the tape of the unsub to see if she knows him. He thinks the unsub may have found out about the team through his mother due to the letters he writes her. She recognises the man and thinks it's Randall Garner. Garcia appears and tells Reid she got to the end of the IP search - Sir Kneighf's real name is Randall Garner, Rebecca Bryant's biological father.
Hotch tells Gideon that Reid and Garcia think they've identified the unsub and want to know how to proceed. Gideon tells Hotch to go, one of them needs to be there.
Most of the team assemble together to see what they've got. Diana pulls out a photo of a house with an address written on the back that was given to her just before she was taken to Quantico. It's not too far away.
The team enter the house and find Elle's gun and ID on a table. They find Randall Garner in a room upstairs. Reid begins a dialogue with Garner who only seems to be interested in Reid asking the question. Reid tells Hotch and Morgan that Garner believes that if Reid asks the right question, it will heal all his wounds. Reid moves slowly towards the room as the other men wait further back. Garner believes that Reid is Sir Percival and that Rebecca is the Holy Grail. Reid tries to explain the reality of things but Garner isn't having none of it. As Reid steps into the room, Garner spins his chair around to reveal a bomb strapped to his chest. Reid tells Hotch and Morgan to wait downstairs but they're not going anywhere. Reid tells Garner there's only one question he needs to ask: "Can you forgive yourself?" He asks where Rebecca is and Garner tells him he already knows, he sent him the map. Garner answers the question and tells Reid he can't forgive himself. With that, Reid starts to step back as he realises what is going to happen. Garner sets off the bomb as Reid runs back towards the team as the explosion occurs behind him. Morgan puts out the fire on Reid's trousers and along with Hotch, they drag him away. Reid stops the group of men for a moment and figures out that Rebecca's location was revealed in the photo given to his mother. A light was on in the basement downstairs and that's where she is. Rebecca is found in chains that Reid unlocks with his key. The team manage to get her out as flames engulf her cell.
On the plane, Elle apologises to her dad for telling him she hated him. She wanted him to teach her to ride her bike knowing that he had to work and that she wished she had told him she loved him. She can't stay with him, though. He says that it's okay and he'll be here when it's time. Elle wakes up in the hospital as a doctor tells her to sleep, she'll be fine.
Hotch, Morgan and Reid arrive back at the office where JJ informs them that Elle is going to be okay. Hotch thanks everyone and Garcia says they could only have gotten so far without Mrs. Reid.
Reid tells his mother they found Rebecca and she's safe. Diana asks if it's time for lunch yet, she's holding a lecture in her room after lunch. Reid asks if he can attend the lecture too and his mother asks if he's read any of the material. He tells her he's had them read to him. "Wonderful, that's the best way, isn't it?" she responds.
As Gideon stands at Elle's bedside, holding her hand, Hotch is at her house and filling up a bucket with water. He pulls on some rubber gloves and sets to work on cleaning the blood off Elle's wall.
