Cupid (2009)

Cupid (2009)

From creator Rob Thomas (Veronica Mars) comes Cupid, a remake of the 1998 cult favorite of the same name. New York's new resident, Cupid (Bobby Cannavale), must orchestrate 100 happily-ever-afters before he is allowed to return home to Mount Olympus, punishment from the Gods for the current sorry state of love. Sent without his trademark bow and arrow, Cupid must learn what really makes love work as he navigates the modern metropolis of New York City. There, living under the name of Trevor Pierce, he meets and comes under the supervision of famous psychologist and author Dr. Claire Allen (Sarah Paulson) who is also dedicated to helping lonely souls find happiness, though she has a very different and much more coldly clinical view on love than Trevor. As they work and interact, Claire tries to figure out who Trevor really is... Is he a man who has lost his mind, as seems reasonable, or, perhaps, is he really Cupid, as he claims?

Episode Info

Final: 1x07 -- My Fair Masseuse (Jun/16/2009)

In a riff on George Bernard Shaw's Pygmalion (the original play upon which the musical My Fair Lady was based), Trevor sets out to retrain a "lower class" massage therapist to make her more acceptable for the family of her "upper class" ex-boyfriend by connecting her with a dialogue coach to disguise her history. Also, Claire thinks she's onto a clue to Trevor's actual past, but is it a faux lead?

Having been a fan of the original Cupid from the time it was actually in original airing, I was rather surprised to see this getting given a slot. I don't expect it to succeed, and didn't expect it to work at all without Piven, but it does manage to work. I can't say how well it will compare to the original after only one ep, but it does have charm and style and wit sufficient to make it possibly work. Read more
