J.R. makes a dramatic return to Dallas, determined to reclaim control of Ewing Oil, which is now in the hands of his archenemy, Cliff Barnes. J.R. schemes to destroy Cliff's merger with McKay whilst also attempting to reunite his family, including his ex-wife, Sue Ellen, and his son, John Ross, who are now living in England.
J.R. has a dream in which Sue Ellen and Bobby are together. J.R. plans a hostile takeover of Ewing Oil which is being run by Bobby and Sue Ellen.
The special reunited original cast members Larry Hagman, Patrick Duffy, Linda Gray, Steve Kanaly, Ken Kercheval, Victoria Principal, Charlene Tilton and Mary Crosby at Southfork Ranch in Parker, Texas to reminisce about their time together on the show, as well as special tributes to Jim Davis and Barbara Bel Geddes, who was too ill to take part in the reunion but sent a telegram of good wishes to her former castmates.

While on their honeymoon, Bobby and April face a surprise twist from Sheila Foley. Meanwhile, Cally begins to doubt her decision to work with James and J.R. tries to find a way to get himself out of the asylum.
