Changing of the Guard - Recap

The episode begins at a farm; Elena sees something on her computer and tells John Ross to wake up. She then tells him that, she is getting a reading and tells her men to pull the oil drill. Then everybody stands back, and it is seen that they have struck oil, much to everybody’s delight and excitement. Meanwhile a doctor tells Bobby that, he is suffering from a very rare form of intestinal cancer. Turns out this news is being delivered to him on his birthday. Bobby tells the doctor to keep this information a secret. The doctor advises Bobby against not telling anyone, as the chances of survival in this type of cancer decreases as days pass by. Bobby tells him that he has business to attend to; hence he can’t afford to tell anyone.

Christopher in the meanwhile is trying to sell his idea of Methane replacing conventional sources of energy, to investors. Christopher also tells them that Bobby his father, is out of the energy business. The investor offers him only a 10 percent share and Christopher declines it. Just then a woman arrives, talks to him in French and tells him to come along with her as she needs some help. She then takes him into the women’s locker room, strips down for him, and the two begin making out passionately. Just then a woman in the locker room who hears his voice from the other side of the wall calls out for him by his name. He then talks to the woman who he knows, and also introduces her to his fiancée Rebecca. Bobby meanwhile tells his wife Annie about a world cruise he has booked for him and her, to go together on. John Ross and Elena are meanwhile celebrating their new found fortune at a bar, over a few drinks.

Later, John Ross talks to someone sitting in a Ferrari and tells him “there is one thing my day taught me is to hope for the best and prepare for the worst; stay tuned”. The car then drives away. Bobby meanwhile pays JR who is suffering from clinical depression a visit, and tells him how the fights over him and oil changed Bobby, in a way he doesn’t like. He also tells JR that he wants Christopher and John Ross to be like one family, and not feud like he and JR did all their lives. Later, the whole family meets at Bobby’s house. Rebecca is introduced to John Ross there. John Ross’s mother too comes in. Later at dinner Christopher tells everyone how Rebecca’s parents died in a plane crash, and she only has a brother in the form of a family. John Ross then proposes that Elena be Rebecca’s bridesmaid. Elena awkwardly agrees and so does Rebecca. Bobby tells John Ross to go and meet JR, his father.

Jon Ross in turn tells Bobby that he has nothing to say to his father. Bobby then tells everyone that he is planning to sell Southfork, much to everyone’s surprise. John Ross then takes Christopher and Bobby to the place where he found oil. Bobby tells him that he is sick of the family fighting over money. Bobby then tells John Ross that there will be no drilling on his mother’s land, and also that alternative energy sources are the future. Christopher too intervenes and John Ross tells him to butt out, as he is adopted and hence not a Ewing. The two then get into a fist fight and Bobby tears them apart. Bobby then warns John Ross that there would be no drilling on his ranch. Later it is shown how John Ross and Bobby are being pacified by their respective partners, with each blaming the other. Later Bobby is handed a legal notice informing him that John Ross has filed an injunction against the sale of Southfork.

Bobby then tells his agent Mitch to look for a conservancy with deep pockets, and tells him that, if John Ross is planning to turn Southfork into a battlefield, he will give John Ross the fight of his life. Later Bobby and a sheriff hand John Ross a court order, stating that he has to stop drilling immediately. Meanwhile Christopher’s contact in China tells him that there might be a connection between harvesting Methane and earthquakes, hence they are being shut down. He tells Christopher what they are doing is not safe. John Ross meanwhile pays his father JR a visit. He tells JR about his conflict with Bobby. JR then tells John Ross that Bobby was always a fool. He then tells John Ross that they have a lot of catching up to do. He also tells John Ross “I forgive you for not visiting”. Later John Ross tells Elena to spy on Christopher.

John Ross also tells her that he and she will always be the black sheep of the family no matter what. She is then reminded by John Ross how Christopher used her and then threw her away, just because she is the cook’s daughter. Later, Elena pays Christopher a visit, in his office. She reminisces with him about old times. She then sees an article on his computer which says that Chinese officials are looking at hydrate mining as a cause for possible earthquakes. He then tells her how the Methane extraction led to an underwater earthquake. Hence he can’t continue as he can’t risk hurting innocent lives. She then returns a ring he had given her earlier, and leaves. Later Elena tells John Ross that, she did not find out anything of consequence.

Meanwhile in the middle of the night Bobby’s wife hears a noise in the house, she picks up a gun, loads it and goes into the room from where the sound came. She then sees a masked intruder searching for something in Bobby’s study; the intruder makes a run for it on seeing her. Later she finds a bottle of medicine in Bobby’s study, prescribed for him. Meanwhile, the masked intruder is shown copying files from Christopher’s computer, and handing a guy who works in his office some money. Bobby’s wife meanwhile discovers that the prescription pills she found, is used for the treatment of gastrointestinal tumors. She on seeing this breaks down into tears. Bobby later meets up with a woman from Sol Conservancy, who is there to see his land. Later, Christopher introduces Bobby to Tommy, Rebecca’s brother. Christopher then tells Bobby to not do anything about the conservancy issue, till they have had time to talk.

John Ross comes in, and Bobby warns him not to create trouble at wedding. John Ross’s mother later tells him that her contacts can help him, with his issue. Later, a man hands John Ross a flash drive. He then checks out the flash drive, in which are the articles about the Chinese earthquakes, and the risks involved with Methane extraction. John Ross then confronts Christopher about the issue he has just discovered. John Ross then tells Christopher to convince Bobby to take Southfork off the market, or else he would expose Christopher. Christopher feels Elena told John Ross about the whole issue and confronts her about it. Elena tells Christopher that she didn’t tell John Ross anything. The two then clear their misunderstandings, and tell each other how much they love each other.

Christopher then goes to John Ross and tells him that, he knows it was John Ross who created the misunderstanding between him and Elena. Later Christopher tells Bobby the real issue, and also assures him that he can in the future, manage to extract Methane safely. Bobby later tells the woman from Sol Conservancy that, he would like to go ahead with his project. Christopher later marries Rebecca, and Elena as bridesmaid looks on in dismay. JR later introduces John Ross to Marta Sol from Sol Conservancy, whom he had seen, with Bobby earlier.

JR tells John Ross that he knows Marta since she was a kid, and her dad and he go way back. JR then tells John Ross that he too has a right over Southfork, and that oil is his birth right. Later John Ross meets Marta alone and tells her that Southfork will be his and his alone. She in turn tells him “I hope you know what you are doing”. The episode ends.
