Pascoe looks into the death of an elderly woman at a health clinic and is horrified when Dalziel, still recovering from his heart attack, does some off duty investigating of his own. Dalziel begins to piece together a case while enduring the clinic's full range of therapies. Two more deaths occur. Is Pascoe too preoccupied with his growing attraction to Dr. Laurie?

Dalziel and Pascoe attend a retirement party for a senior colleague, Donald Fitzgerald. Dalziel can't forgive Fitzgerald for losing a recent court case agianst local villain and long standing adversary, Danny Macer. He's even angrier when Macer turns up to celebrate, but anger turns to suspicion when Fitzgerald's found dead on a golf course the following morning.
