Week 7: Fusion dances - Recap

With Sabrina Bryan & Louis Van Amstel out of the competition, Shawn Johnson & Derek Hough, Melissa Rycroft & Tony Dovolani, Apolo Anton Ohno & Karina Smirnoff, Gilles Marini & Peta Murgatroyd, Kelly Monaco & Val Chmerkovskiy, Kirstie Alley & Maksim Chmerkovskiy and Emmitt Smith & Cheryl Burke enter Fusion Week where the stars will have to mix two dances into one. They kick things off with the Troupe and some pros showing how the Fusion dance looks. First round is Fusion Dance Round.

Apolo Anton Ohno & Karina Smirnoff are up first. They get into rehearsals and they have to start to move their way to the top. Karina tries to have Apolo absorb the dance moves and Apolo has a hard time. Dancing the Cha-Cha/Paso Doble, they come out and dance. They go to the judges and Len says that it is like looking in the mirror and says that he came out and attacked it. Bruno says that he should be in Twilight and says that there is a leader of the pack now. He says that it was wonderful. Carrie Ann says that it is good that he is pushing himself and says that the dance was great. They get their scores: Carrie Ann with a 9, Len with a 9 and Bruno with a 9. Total score of 27/30.

Emmitt Smith & Cheryl Burke are next. They get into rehearsals and they talk about how the Foxtrot didn’t score great. Emmitt tries to get to know the dance steps and goes back home for a visit and wants to make them proud. Dancing the Rumba/Samba, they come out and dance. They go to the judges and Bruno says that was a balance blend and says that he did it with such ease. Carrie Ann says that it was good, but the upper body was lacking in the middle. Len says that he did a great job. They get their scores: Carrie Ann with an 8.5, Len with a 9.5 and Bruno with a 9.5. Total score of 27.5/30.

Kirstie Alley & Maksim Chmerkovskiy are up next. They get into rehearsals and Kirstie says that she can inspire people. They helped out with the Hurricaine Relief a bit this week. They get their moves down. Dancing the Quickstep/Samba, they come out and dance. They go to the judges and Carrie Ann says that her heart is pure, but the dance was out of sync and fell apart. Len says that it was an admiralible effort. Bruno says that she was entertaining and says that she lost timing a bit, but always entertaining. They get their scores: Carrie Ann with an 8, Len with an 8 and Bruno with an 8. Total score of 24/30.

Kelly Monaco & Val Chmerkovskiy are next. They get into rehearsals and Val says that he didn’t expect to be this far. They talk about the connection that she they have for one another. They work on the routine and are passionate of what they are doing. Dancing the Cha-Cha/Foxtrot, they come out and dance. They go to the judges and Len says that there was a little incident, but loved it. Bruno says that was a flashy cha-cha and says that it was great. Carrie Ann says that the holds and everything was very good. They get their scores: Carrie Ann with a 9, Len with a 9 and Bruno with a 9. Total score of 27/30.

Next up is Melissa Rycroft & Tony Dovolani. They get into rehearsals and they are going to have to show the audience that they want it more. They get into the routine and Melissa is determined to get the routine down. Dancing the Cha-Cha/Tango, they come out and dance. They go to the judges and Bruno says that the transition was great. The shapes in the Tango was fantastic. Carrie Ann says that tonight, she is a star and says that she loved everything. Len says that it was beautiful and loved it. They get their scores: Carrie Ann with a 10, Len with a 9.5 and Bruno with a 9.5. Total score of 29/30.

Shawn Johnson & Derek Hough & Mark Ballas are up next. With Derek injured, Mark steps in and they work on getting the routine down. Shawn finds it hard to concentrate on the routine. Dancing the Tango/Paso Doble, Mark and Shawn come out and dance. They go to the judges and Carrie Ann says that was an amazing fusion and says that it was great. Len says that was a firecracker and says that was great. Bruno says that was flawless and says that it was amazing. They get their scores: Carrie Ann with a 10, Len with a 10 and Bruno with a 10. Total score of 30/30.

Last up for the individual dances is Gilles Marini & Peta Murgatroyd. They get into rehearsals and Gilles struggles with the transitions. He goes to a photo shoot and gets back to work. He wants the judges to feel the sexuality. Dancing the Argentine Tango/Samba, they come out and dance. They go to the judges and Len says that it was well done. Bruno says that is how it is to be done and says that it was great presence. Carrie Ann says that the arm things are going on still. However, it was a fantastic fusion. They get their scores: Carrie Ann with a 9.5, Len with a 9.5 and Bruno with a 9.5. Total score of 28.5/30.

The AT&T Spotlight is up and a group from Utah is there to show their dance fusion. Mark Ballas and Chelsie Hightower are helping them in the dance. The Future Stars of Ballroom, Mark and Chelsie come out and dance.

The swing dance marathon is underway and they look at the rehearsals before. Emmitt says that he is ready for this. Kelly face-plants on the mat during the routine. The dance begins and the first couple out is Kirstie & Maks with a total of 28/40. The next couple out is Gilles & Peta with a total of 33.5/40 points. Apolo & Karina are next to go with 33/40 points. Next out is Emitt & Cheryl with a total of 34.5/40. The next couple out is Shawn & Mark with a total of 38/40. The next couple out is Kelly & Val with a total of 36/40. This means that the winning couple is Melissa & Tony with 39/40! Next week, the scores will carry over.
