Week 9: Semi-finals - Recap

With Kirstie Alley & Maksim Chmerkovskiy and Gilles Marini & Peta Murgatroyd out of the running, it is the Semi-Finals as Shawn Johnson & Derek Hough, Melissa Rycroft & Tony Dovolani, Apolo Anton Ohno & Karina Smirnoff, Kelly Monaco & Val Chmerkovskiy, and Emmitt Smith & Cheryl Burke dance to songs from Michael Jackson’s “Bad” album. They kick off with a dance from the pros and “The Troupe” dancing to a medley of Michael Jackson.

The first round begins and first up is Melissa Rycroft & Tony Dovolani. They get into rehearsals and they are struggling getting to know the dance. Tony hurts his back. Dancing a Caveman Hustle, they come out and dance. They go to the judges and Len says that she never disappoints and says that they captured the flavor of the dance and says he really enjoyed it. Bruno says that it was amazing, but she lost her footing a bit though. Carrie Ann says that she loved it and says that the caveman dance was better than the hustle. They get their scores: Carrie Ann with a 9, Len with a 9.5 and Bruno with a 9. Total score of 27.5/30.

Shawn Johnson & Derek Hough are up next. They get into rehearsals and they start to put together the dance and get help from an expert. They are realizing that this is not natural at all. Shawn says that this is going to be hard. Dancing a Knightrider Bangra, they come out and dance. They go to the judges and Bruno says that he loved it and says that it was great. Carrie Ann says that was a really challenging dance. Len says that she was fantastic. They get their scores: Carrie Ann with a 10, Len with a 10 and Bruno with a 10. Total score of 30/30.

Apolo Anton Ohno & Karina Smirnoff are next. They get into rehearsals and they need to make sure that they put in the most rehearsal. They try to get the moves down and Apolo struggles to be perfect. Dancing a Big Top Jazz, they come out and dance. They go to the judges and Carrie Ann says that she loved the concept, but it was a little disjointed and the dismounts were quite sloppy. Len says that there were a couple awkward moments, but it was well done. Bruno says that it was a great mixture and says that they only missed one step. They get their scores: Carrie Ann with a 8.5, Len with a 9 and Bruno with a 9.5. Total score of 27/30.

Emmitt Smith & Cheryl Burke are next and they get into rehearsals. Emmitt says that his mom called and told him last week was great. He doesn’t like the cartoon stuff with the Lindy Hop and struggles. Dancing a Espionage Lindy Hop, they come out and dance. They go to the judges and Len says that he liked the energy. He would have liked a little bit more dance, but it was great. Bruno says that it was the most fun performance. Carrie Ann says that was his most animated dance. They get their scores: Carrie Ann with a 9, Len with a 9 and Bruno with a 9. Total score of 27/30.

Last up for the first round are Kelly Monaco & Val Chmerkovskiy. They get into rehearsals and they work on the timing of the dance. Kelly gets a little frustrated in the dance and Val pushes her with the routine. Dancing a Surfer Flamenco, they come out and dance. They go to the judges and Bruno says that she was upstaged by Val’s speedo. He says that the dance wasn’t perfect and couldn’t see the placement. Carrie Ann says that it was all Paso and says that she wanted to see Flamenco. Len says that it had attack and everything and says that it was fantastic. They get their scores: Carrie Ann with a 8, Len with a 9 and Bruno with a 8.5. Total score of 25/30.

The next round is Michael Jackson hits and first up is Melissa Rycroft & Tony Dovolani. They get into rehearsal and struggle with the choreography, but they work through it. Dancing the Argentine Tango, they come out and dance. They go to the judges and Len says that he will be really disappointed if she is not here next week. Bruno says that it was great to see and says that she really excel the expectations. Carrie Ann says that she is magnificent and says that it was passionate and sensuous. They get their scores: Carrie Ann with a 10, Len with a 10 and Bruno with a 10. Total score of 30/30. Grand Total of 57.5/60.

Shawn Johnson & Derek Hough are next up. They get into rehearsals and Shawn says that it is going to be great. They struggle with the choreography and Derek stresses a bit. They work on the routine the best they can. Dancing the Argentine Tango, they come out and dance. They go to the judges and Bruno says that it was breath-taking and says it was great. Carrie Ann says that they lacked the real passion of the dance. Bruno disagrees. Len says that they nailed both parts of the dance. They get their scores: Carrie Ann with a 9, Len with a 10 and Bruno with a 10. Total score of 29/30. Grand Total of 59/60.

Apolo Anton Ohno & Karina Smirnoff are next. They get into rehearsal and they have to make this exceptional in everything and have a connection. Apolo says that this is far more than just dancing and says that it is the hardest thing that he has done. For him to make the Final, it has to be perfect. Dancing the Rumba, they come out and dance. They go to the judges and Carrie Ann says that is what she is talking about and says that was the most passionate dance. Len says that it was wave after wave of calmness and says that it was fabulous. Bruno says that he nailed it and says that it was perfect. They get their scores: Carrie Ann with a 10, Len with a 10 and Bruno with a 10. Total score of 30/30. Grand Total of 57/60

Emmitt Smith & Cheryl Burke are up next. They get into rehearsal and Emmitt says that he is going to push through no matter what despite struggling with the routine. Cheryl and Emmitt both feel the pressure and Cheryl says that they need to fight through it. Dancing the Tango, they come out and dance. They go to the judges and Len says that he had a tough time and still showed that he can cope with it. Bruno says that it was so powerful and effective. However, the footwork could have been more exact. Carrie Ann says that he brought his A Game, but the hold was a bit broad and footwork was bad. They get their scores: Carrie Ann with a 9, Len with a 9 and Bruno with a 9. Total score of 27/30. Grand Total of 54/60.

Last of the night is Kelly Monaco & Val Chmerkovskiy. They get into rehearsals and they can channel their love for one another. She says that she has problems with intimacy and Val works her through it. She says that she can hang with the competition. Dancing the Rumba, they come out and dance. They go to the judges and Bruno says that was smoldering and says that the chemistry is perfect. He says that it was great to see. Carrie Ann says that was beautiful and says that it was fantastic. Len says that he loved the speed and slowness of the dance and says that they did it wonderful. They get their scores: Carrie Ann with a 9.5, Len with a 9.5 and Bruno with a 9.5. Total score of 28.5/30. Grand Total of 54/60. That is it for the performances!
