Season 16, Episode 1 - Recap

The new season kicks off with a new cast. Kellie Pickler & Derek Hough, Victor Ortiz & Lindsay Arnold, Ingo Rademacher & Kym Johnson, Lisa Vanderpump & Gleb Savchenko, D.L. Hughley & Cheryl Burke, Zendaya Coleman & Val Chmerkovskiy, Sean Lowe & Peta Murgatroyd, Alexandra Raisman & Mark Ballas, Dorothy Hamill & Tristan MacManus, Wynonna Judd & Tony Dovolani, Andy Dick & Sharna Burgess, and Jacoby Jones & Karina Smirnoff will fight for the mirror-ball trophy. Tom Burgeron and Brooke Burke-Charvet welcome the crowd and they have added a few things to this season.

Kellie & Derek are first and she is a Country Music singer who competed on ‘American Idol’. In rehearsals, Derek compliments her flexible back. They get the routine down and Derek feels confident that this is going to be a good season. Dancing the Cha-Cha-Cha, they come out and dance. They go to the judges and a newlywed Len Goodman says that was fun. He says that it was a great start. Bruno Tonioli says that the shapes of things to come are great and says she has to work on her legs a bit. Carrie Ann Inaba says that she impressed all three of them. She says that she has incredible torso movement. They get their scores: Carrie Ann with a 7, Len with a 7 and Bruno with a 7. Total score of 21/30.

Victor & Lindsay are next and he is a boxing champion. He says that he was 17 when he started boxing. In rehearsal, he thinks the Foxtrot is where he wears a fox suit and dances. They practice and learn the dance. Dancing the Foxtrot, they come out and dance. They go to the judges and Bruno says that was a wonderful combination and says that they are light-footed. Still, there is a lot of work to do. Carrie Ann says that his posture was great and says that he sparkles. Len says that there is a lot of things going for him and says that he liked it, but he needed to have more to it. They get their scores: Carrie Ann with a 6, Len with a 6 and Bruno with a 6. Total score of 18/30.

Ingo & Kym are next and he plays Jax on ‘General Hospital’. He runs, swims and rides bikes as well. He meets Kym and they say that they are going to make a good time. They get into rehearsal and have a hard time learning Contemporary. They manage eventually. Dancing Contemporary, they come out and dance. They go to the judges and Carrie says that in contemporary, lifts are allowed and says that it was really great to see. Len says that he is not convinced with that and says that he didn’t see dance. Bruno says that was good and says that the lifts and lunges were bloody good. They get their scores: Carrie Ann with a 7, Len with a 6 and Bruno with a 7. Total score of 20/30.

Lisa & Gleb are next and she is from ‘Real Housewives of Beverly Hills’ and ‘Vanderpuff Rules’. They meet and this is Gleb’s first season on the show. They get into rehearsals and Lisa doesn’t like the closeness of it all. Dancing the Foxtrot, they come out and dance. They go to the judges and Len says that it was acceptable, but not exceptional. He says that there was too much staggering about. Bruno says that says that the jewelry around her neck weighed her down. Carrie Ann says that this dance suited her, but she was out of sync. They get their scores: Carrie Ann with a 6, Len with a 6 and Bruno with a 6. Total score of 18/30.

D.L. Hugley & Cheryl Burke he is a comedian who had a tough life. He meets with Cheryl and they get into rehearsals. He mixes comedy in the rehearsals and says that it is going to be fun. Dancing the Cha-Cha-Cha, they come out and dance. They go to the judges and Bruno says that the problem was the timing and says that it looked like it was under-rehearsed. Carrie Ann says that was “yikes” and says that he needs to practice a little harder. Len says that this was rough and says that he has to do a better and work his butt off. This was no good. They get their scores: Carrie Ann with a 4, Len with a 4 and Bruno with a 4. Total score of 12/30.

Zendaya & Val are next. She is from Disney’s ‘Shake It Up’ and she is a hip-hop dancer too. She meets Val and she is the youngest contestant ‘Dancing With The Stars’ has had. Dancing Contemporary, they come out and dance. They go to the judges and Carrie Ann says that was amazing and says that she is a fantastic dancer. Len says that was great. Bruno says that was a superb debut. It is inspiring to see someone do so well at her age. They get their scores: Carrie Ann with an 8, Len with an 8 and Bruno with an 8. Total score of 24/30. Highest score of the night so far!

Sean & Peta are next. He was ‘The Bachelor’. He gets into rehearsals and Sean wants to know how to dance so that he doesn’t look like a fool. Dancing the Foxtrot, they come out and dance. They go to the judges and Len says that he liked it, but not a lot. The posture was good and footwork was good too. The dance needs refinement. Bruno says he has a very effective pelvic thrust. He needs to refine though. Carrie Ann says that she likes it rough and says that he is showing people that he can go far. They get their scores: Carrie Ann with a 7, Len with a 6 and Bruno with a 6. Total score of 19/30.

Alexandra & Mark are next. She is a US Olympian Gold Medalist. They get into rehearsal and Mark works with her to coach her through the dance. Dancing the Cha-Cha-Cha, they come out and dance. They go to the judges and Bruno says that she can shake it like the best. She needs to straiten the back of the knee. Carrie Ann says that she has potential, but says that it was a little safe. Len says that he loved the vitality of it, but the legs need to be crisper. However, it was well done. They get their scores: Carrie Ann with a 7, Len with a 7 and Bruno with a 7. Total score of 21/30.

Dorothy & Tristan are next and she was a US Olympic Gold Medalist back in 1976. She was diagnosed with breast cancer and she survived. They get into rehearsals and they learn the routine with some issues. Dancing Contemporary, they come out and dance. They go to the judges and Carrie Ann says that she is a winner in so many ways and the performance was heartfelt. Len says that was outstanding and says that despite the unsteady moments, it was great. Bruno says that it was deeply felt and says that as she progresses, it will get better. They get their scores: Carrie Ann with a 7, Len with a 7 and Bruno with a 7. Total score of 21/30.

Wynonna & Tony are next. She is a Country Singer and she has been caring for her husband since his accident. They get into rehearsals and work out their routine. Dancing the Cha-Cha-Cha, they come out and dance. They go to the judges and Len says that overall she showed everything and says that it was a good performance. Bruno says that she did a great job, but she was a little tense. Carrie Ann says that she was working it and says that she could give it more. They get their scores: Carrie Ann with a 6, Len with a 6 and Bruno with a 6. Total score of 18/30.

Andy & Sharna are next and he is a comedian and actor who had a hard time cleaning himself up. In rehearsals, Andy struggles with the dancing and breaks down. Dancing the Foxtrot, they come out and dance. They go to the judges and Bruno says that it was like watching Woody Allen doing the Foxtrot and says that it was a good job. Still, there is a lot to work on. Carrie Ann says that there is something like the ‘Ugly Duckling’ coming to life. Len says that the choreography was good, but it was a little to Robocop through the dance. They get their scores: Carrie Ann with a 6, Len with a 5 and Bruno with a 6. Total score of 17/30.

Last up fro the night is Jacoby & Karina. He is a Superbowl Champion for the Baltimore Ravens. He says that he wants another victory. He has knee surgery and they have to work hard to catch up for time missed. Dancing the Cha-Cha-Cha, they come out and dance. They go to the judges and Carrie Ann says that she loved it and says that he has some moves. He needs to work on the posture. Len says that the technique was terrible, but the performance was great. Bruno says that he has potential and says that he can grind, but needs to work on his technique. They get their scores: Carrie Ann with a 7, Len with a 6 and Bruno with a 7. Total score of 20/30.
