Season 16, Episode 9 - Recap

With the elimination of Sean Lowe & Peta Murgatroyd last week, the competition reaches the Semi-Finals where Kellie Pickler & Derek Hough, Ingo Rademacher & Kym Johnson, Zendaya Coleman & Val Chmerkovskiy, Alexandra Raisman & Mark Ballas and Jacoby Jones & Karina Smirnoff are going to have to battle it out for a spot in the Finals. There are two rounds of dances.

First up are Kellie Pickler & Derek Hough. They get into rehearsals and Derek says they need to make the dance look good. Kellie struggles getting the dance moves down. Dancing the Argentine Tango, they come out and dance. They go to the judges and Len says the dance was a mix of pride and joy and says it was fantastic. Bruno says it was sublime and says it was pure perfection. Carrie Ann says it has only been 8 weeks and she has perfected the dances. They get their scores: Carrie Ann with a 10, Len with a 10 and Bruno with a 10. Total score of 30/30.

Up next are Ingo Rademacher & Kym Johnson. They get into rehearsals and Ingo gets frustrated with not being able to get the dance moves down. He says they have to get in the extra hours. Dancing the Samba, they come out and dance. They go to the judges and Bruno says he loves the determination and says he can see that he put the work in. Carrie Ann says he is the underdog, but he needs to step it up a bit more. Len says he thought he did a good job with a difficult dance. They get their scores: Carrie Ann with an 8, Len with an 8 and Bruno with an 8. Total score of 24/30.

Next up are Alexandra Raisman & Mark Ballas. They get into rehearsals and Mark is happy with the new dance this week and that they have two dances. Working on the first dance, Mark wants her to be more passionate. Dancing the Rumba, they come out and dance. They go to the judges and Carrie Ann says she drew them in and says it was great. Len says it had romance and a lovely story. He says she has grown. Bruno says she had them all enchanted. They get their scores: Carrie Ann with a 10, Len with a 10 and Bruno with a 10. Total score of 30/30.

Up next are Jacoby Jones & Karina Smirnoff. They get into rehearsals and Karina gets a little frustrated with him and he gets mad because he is not getting the dance down. During the dress rehearsal, Karina hits her jaw. Dancing the Argentine Tango, they come out and dance. They go to the judges and Len says it was great and right on the money. Bruno says they are animals. He says it was so slick and clean. Carrie Ann is speechless. They get their scores: Carrie Ann with a 10, Len with a 10 and Bruno with a 10. Total score of 30/30.

Last up for the first round are Zendaya Coleman & Val Chmerkovskiy. They get into rehearsals and they bring in Zendaya’s 1st Hip Hop Teacher, Kim Sims Batiste. She teaches Val what to do in the Hip-Hop part of the dance. They get the other dance out of the way. Dancing the Quickstep, they come out and dance. They go to the judges and Bruno says he loved the concept, but they lost footing a few times. Carrie Ann says it was kind of a mess. She says the body content was off and they were dragging each other through the dance. Len says the star went out a bit. They get their scores: Carrie Ann with an 8, Len with an 8 and Bruno with a 9. Total score of 25/30.

The next round begins and Kellie Pickler & Derek Hough are up first. They show a video about who Kellie is and where she comes from. Dancing Flamenco, they come out and dance. They go to the judges and Len says she is small, but her talent is huge. He says she booked her place in the Finals. Bruno says there were a few moments where she tightened up. Carrie Ann asks why she tensed up and she says it was the dress a bit. They get their scores: Carrie Ann with a 9, Len with a 10 and Bruno with a 9. Total score of 28/30. Grand total of 58/60.

Up next are Ingo Rademacher & Kym Johnson. They show a video about who Ingo is and where he comes from. Dancing the Charleston, they come out and dance. They go to the judges and Bruno says the dance was fun. Carrie Ann says it was fun and the mistakes worked with the dance. Len says it was his best dance of the season. They get their scores: Carrie Ann with a 9, Len with a 9 and Bruno with a 9. Total score of 27/30. Grand total of 51/60.

Next up are Alexandra Raisman & Mark Ballas. They show a video about who Alexandra is and where she comes from. Dancing Afro Jazz, they come out and dance. They go to the judges and Carrie Ann says the dance was ridiculously hard. She says it was fantastic. Len says she kept the feeling of the dance, but he would have liked a little bit more connection. Bruno says it was great and says she has exceeded all expectations. They get their scores: Carrie Ann with a 10, Len with a 9 and Bruno with a 10. Total score of 29/30. Grand total of 59/60.

Up next are Jacoby Jones & Karina Smirnoff. They show a video about who Jacoby is and where he comes from. Dancing the Lindy Hop, they come out and dance. They go to the judges and Len says it was full on and says overall it was fabulous. Bruno says he got everyone turned up. Carrie Ann says he is the number one entertainer of the season. They get their scores: Carrie Ann with a 10, Len with a 9 and Bruno with a 10. Total score of 29/30. Grand total of 59/60.

Last up for the night are Zendaya Coleman & Val Chmerkovskiy. They show a video of who Zendaya is and where she comes from. Dancing Hip-Hop, they come out and dance. They go to the judges and Bruno says it was so cool it gives him chills. He says it was great. Carrie Ann says she can’t wait until the album comes out for her and says Val did a great job. Len says it was great. They get their scores: Carrie Ann with a 10, Len with a 10 and Bruno with a 10. Total score of 30/30. Grand total of 55/60. That’s it for the performances!
