Exterior shots of Capeside High were filmed at the University of North Carolina at Wilmington.
Worthington University, the university Joey and Audrey attend, is a ficitional university. Scenes at the university were filmed at Duke University and the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill.
Producers originally wanted the series' theme song to be "Hand in My Pocket" by Alanis Morissette; however, Alanis Morissette would not grant permission to use her song as the theme. Producers switched the theme to Paula Cole's "I Don't Want to Wait."
During the final days of The WB before its switch to The CW, the Pilot episode of this series was the last episode to be aired.
Nearly 500 actors tried out for the part of Dawson.
Creator Kevin Williamson based the role of Joey on a long-time close friend.
FOX originally took interest in the pilot, but ultimately rejected it leading the series to be picked up by the WB.
Series regulars Kerr Smith (Jack McPhee) and Joshua Jackson (Pacey Witter) both directed an episode during the series run.
Katie Holmes (Joey Potter) is the only series regular to appear in all 128 series episodes.
