With two of the most popular characters being written out of the show can the series survive without them?

Instead of firing two of the most popular actors on the series they should of got rid of some of the characters that do nothing. If they had wanted to boost the show's ratings they should have had Marlena possessed by the devil again like she was during the mid 1990's which made the show the second ranked daytime show.

Bo and Hope are now the only decent characters left on the show.

I agree, it won't be the same without Marlena and John. But NBC did renew Days through 2010 (or possibly 2011), so hopefully they can rebound.

The show has just had a record low of amount of viewers and I'm not sure what can be done now to turn things around.

DAYS was renewed through 2013, if NBC were to cancel it would end up costing them more than keeping it on even though it is hitting record lows. I don't think things look good for next years renewal though. The main problem is decisions made higher up and that person is safe from losing his job.

Ratings couldn't be much worse. I'm not sure what can be done to save the show but maybe its time to see Marlena possessed again. When they did that in the 1990s the show managed to get its best ratings in a long time and the show was ranked number 2.
