	A. W. Merrick, played by Jeffrey Jones (1) A.W. Merrick is the owner, publisher, printer and writer of the “The Deadwood Pioneer”, the camp’s newspaper. He becomes interested in Bullock due to his association with Bill Hickok and gradually becomes friends with Bullock and Star, often eating meals with them and Charlie Utter. His character is based on the real life “Pioneer” publisher, A. W. Merrick. The Pioneer is still published today, although it has moved it’s operation to Spearfish.
