Eureka it's Star Defiance Wars!Rating: 4 likes, 13 dislikes
Last season Syfy took out a few shows. Shows that had a devoted following. Shows that were fun. Shows that still had life. It was rumoured that there would MTv like reality shows taking their place.
It is with a breath released in relief that there is at least one post-apocalyptic, hard science fiction. Real Sci-Fi! Stuff that will cost us heaps in make-up at Comic-cons. Defiance comes replete with eight, and counting, different alien races, extra terrestrial space junk in retrograde orbit, politics, racism, nepotism, tragic love, hi tech toys, flashing lights, an unreachable utopia, sinister enemies and a western style saloon/brothel almost directly from Tatooine (run by the madame mayor's sister, naturally!).
It is, however, difficult not to draw a close parallel with Eureka:
+ Hero and daughter roll into town amid family strife...check.
+ Something happens that requires the heroes special skills to resolve...check.
+ Tension between hero and daughter result in her running away...check.
+ Hero is building a love triangle...check.
+ Daughter comes back in the nick of time. Her and hero put aside differences, to save the day...check.
+ Hero is asked to become Sheriff...check.
That doesn't mean that Defiance is crap. Quite the opposite, It's okay. It was a fun romp through the hour and I didn’t feel like I wanted the time back. Being only some thirty three years in the future the show's writer are able to connect our present to theirs with pithy social reference. Such as, but not confined to, the scene in Star Wars where Han and Chewy are about to fly off after collecting their reward.
Like I said. Defiance, after the first episode was alright. I'd like to see it get a little darker, and cerebral, but it wont because there will be a young audience attracted to it, most likely. But at least there's some Science Fiction in the land again!
