| Another Missed Opportunity From the Degrassi Crew

First off let me state that I applaud the show for not shying away from the tough issues. It never benefits society to bury our heads in the sand and hope if we ignore an issue, that it will magically be solved. That, of course, isnt reality.
That being said, this episode -- and the show in general -- have many glaring weaknesses that also should not be ignored. The greatest issue I have with shows like this is that everything must be filtered through the PC police, instead of having the courage to define true right and wrong, and then stand for right. I am realistic about the slim possibility of this happening in the entertainment culture, but that doesnt mean that I have given up hope that someone will have the courage to take a stand against the garbage that is being shoveled into our youth.
Shows such as Degrassi count heavily upon playing on our emotions when dealing with issues such as teen sexuality. But as much as Degrassi sees itself as cutting edge, it sadly takes a run-of-the-mill, expected liberal stance nearly every time.
The show does not -- as many shows do -- ignore the existence of Christianity. But what it has done, since introducing Darcy's character to the show, is make the whole idea of Christianity seem flawed and outdated {yes, a favorite liberal mantra}. Lets take all the popular and "together" kids on the show {all seriously flawed themselves, as are all of us} and give them reckless lines and an uneducated stance about the evils of organized religion. Lets portray the homosexual characters sympathetically -- always -- to tug on our heartstrings and win us over. And then lets have the "Christians" get up on their high horse and appear to be holier-than-thou, so we can then gleefully knock them off their pedestals. Why not just give them white robes and have them prance in circles playing tambourines?
Contrasting this, every time Degrassi has featured issues of homosexuality -- which is often -- it makes it look like something that is natural, harmless, even something to be celebrated. But is this truth? What does the Bible say about issues of homosexuality? Should God's viewpoint really be dismissed, shunned, or mocked? Is God's Word truly "outdated" -- or will it ever be?
Once again in this episode, the members of the Friendship Club are made out to be whacked, insensitive, intolerant, and as Marco tells Spinner at the end -- "lost." In my work, I see the often tragic results of a culture that has lost its awe and reverence for our Holy God.
There are now GLBT "churches" in our society, churches with homosexual leaders in the pulpit, churches that would rather be popular and entertaining than speak Biblical truth. What an incredible injustice we are doing to our up and coming generations by not having the courage to speak the eternal truths of God's Holy Word, so they can see the destructive aspects of what happens when we turn our back on God and live by our own badly flawed set of rules.
We can toss around words like hypocrite and homophobe all we want. The truth is, we are all sinners badly in need of a Savior. And we are all lost without Him.
God is clear in His stance on homosexuality. And His stance will never be outdated. It is rock solid for all of eternity.
So where are the producers, writers, directors and other leaders of the entertainment industry who have the courage to take a stand and speak Biblical truth? Or are we only concerned that we might be labeled "intolerant?"
