As the second season opens, Mike returns back home to discover that Zach is holding Susan hostage and must find a way to rescue them both. Lynette decides to interview for an account executive position at a top ad agency, since Tom has agreed to stay home with the kids. Her potential boss becomes skeptical, so Lynette goes all out to impress her. Rex's mother, Phyllis, comes in for his funeral and ends up driving Bree crazy. Gabrielle starts feeling guilty about being unfaithful and starts visiting Carlos in jail.

Susan gets an unpleasant shock when she discovers just who Edie's new boyfriend is and then she and Mike struggle to find out where their relationship stands now that she knows his secret. Meanwhile Lynette goes back to work, leaving Tom at home in charge of the house, which does not suit Lynette's liking when she returns. Phyllis continues to irritate Bree with all of her melodramatic grieving, and Carlos makes an unusual request of Gabrielle, which she is not pleased with.
