From the viewpoint of Mary Alice Young, a housewife who killed herself, we are exposed to the lives of her family, neighbors and friends she left behind. After her death, her husband begins acting strange, which raises her friends suspicion and gossip begins flying about why she would do such a thing.

From her now elevated viewpoint, Mary Alice shares with us the secrets that are hidden by each one residents of the seemingly perfect Wisteria Lane.

Susan and Edie continue to fight over their sexy neighbor Mike, the plumber. Gabrielle begins to think that her gardener may be getting to attached to her after their affair and worries that Carlos is catching on. Bree gets Rex to agree to marriage counseling, but the counselor needs more help than they do. Meanwhile, Lynette turns to drastic measures to get her kids to behave, but her plan ends up backfiring; the women discuss the meaning of Mary Alice's suicide note; and the measuring cup that Susan left in Edie's house before accidentally burning it down may come back to haunt her when Mrs. Huber finds it.

Lynette disagrees with mom Maisy Gibbons when she tries to produce a "politically correct" play about "Little Red Riding Hood" at the twins' school. Meanwhile, Susan continues to investigate the Zach's disappearance and soon finds that his father, Paul, put him in Seacrest, a mental institution. Susan becomes suspicious of the true reason why Mike decided to move to Wisteria Lane. Lynette finally reaches the breaking point in her addiction to the twins' ADD medication then decides it's time for drastic measures after having a dream about Mary Alice. Mr. Shaw ends up developing a relationship with Edie and also has a connection to Mary Alice Young after he talks to Paul Young on the phone. Lastly, Gabrielle confesses her affair with John to a priest while Carlos' mother is in a coma at the hospital.

Gabrielle decides to organize a fashion show for charity featuring the women of Wisteria Lane. Susan then becomes angry at Gabrielle once she discovers her secret. John's mother, Helen Rowland, thinks her son is sleeping with Susan and not with Gabrielle, but Gabrielle confesses to Helen, to get the heat off Susan, that she's been sleeping with her son. Before Carlos finds out about Gabrielle's secret, he is arrested. Bree decides to take Andrew's behavior and punisment into her own hands. The police investigate a toy chest that is found in the river and the search is on for who put it there.
