The show opens with Jordan Chase at a seminar in Miami. Some of the things he says obviously do not sit well with Dexter, things like “We are born primal,” and the ever popular, “Take it!” He reflects on his own version of the history of humanity, saying “We’ve traded the wild for pavement,” though he does boast the hearty promise that “we shall be delivered!” Meanwhile Dexter calls to mind the man he is looking for at the moment, Cole Harman: “torturer, rapist, murderer”.
LaGuerta is grilled by the press about the undercover operation gone wrong. Ballistics later come back pointing the responsibility for the deaths of any innocent persons that were there that night toward the Fuentes brothers. LaGuerta warns that there are going to be consequences. Morgan, when the newbie starts to blame herself, reassures her that she was only following orders. Morgan asks what Batista is going to do, to which he replies that he does not yet know what he is going to say, and that he is still sorting events in his mind. Morgan then brings it up that he needs to just tell the truth about what happened. Batista forces her to drop the issue. Yasmin’s mother arrives to the precinct. Away from her, Morgan says that she does not feel bad about killing the Fuentes brothers, and she expresses concern over this, saying that it is “a problem”.
The seminar is out for a short recess, and then it will reconvene. This is a chance for Dexter to finally make his move. But before he is given the opportunity to figure out how he is going to make this work, he gets a call from Lumen. She tells Dexter that she cannot make the connection between Jordan and Cole and the other perp. There is only a photo from several years ago, at least a couple decades. Cole, she found out, was dishonorably discharged from the military. Dexter asks how she has been sleeping, and Lumen tells him she has been getting fifteen minutes here and there, which she seems to suggest is better than nothing. She says she expects to “sleep for a year” when it is all over finally.
Cole walks up to Dexter as Dexter gets off the phone, and speaks with him. He tells Dexter he is interested by him. He invites Dexter to their suite. It turns out that Jordan recognized Dexter because of the murder of his wife being all over the news. He tries to come off as sincere about wanting to be supportive. “He is a monster, no question.” He asks Dexter if they have made any progress on the Boyd Fowler case. Suddenly Jordan pulls out a gift and mentions, “a little something in there for Harrison,” which raises every flag in Dexter’s mind. As Dexter walks out, Cole gives Jordan a knowing look, as if to say that things are going to be put into motion very soon.
LaGuerta wants to make Sierra, the newbie cop, the scapegoat for what happened in the club, because the blow would be much weaker against her than against a seasoned detective like Debra Morgan. Morgan protests vehemently using words that are not the nicest, but are completely in character for her.
Lumen gets a call, thinking it is Dexter, but it is in fact her ex-fiancée. He tells her that he had come to see her, and that he misses her. He asks her to go with him to wherever they want to go, because he managed to get two tickets to anywhere in the world. Dexter arrives back at the house and immediately sees that Lumen is exhausted. She denies being less than fine. Dexter gives her a “shopping list” which includes plenty of items they are going to need for when they carry out Cole Harman’s sentence. Lumen reflects about how strange it is to be able to get used to such strange circumstances so quickly.
When Dexter arrives back at the house, he thanks Debra for covering for Dexter. Sonya had just left. Debra tells Dexter that she has six mandatory therapy sessions. She says she would kill Fuentes again. She also says that she feels absolutely nothing when it comes to killing Fuentes, which she quickly realizes is only confirmation that those sessions certainly could not hurt. She says that they should be dead, and that people like Rita and Lundy should not be dead.
When the seminar is back on, we are treated to an onstage testimonial by an overweight man referring to his own “transformation”, including having been married to a beautiful woman, model material for sure. Dexter begins his last minute preparations for the event that is going to happen soon. Lumen and her ex-fiancée meet, and that is when he shows her the tickets he got that are good for anywhere in the world. She says she needs to think about it, and he tells her to be there at a certain time. When she does not arrive, he tears her ticket and leaves.
LaGuerta is seen on television throwing Debra Morgan under the bus when she gives her statement to the media. She confronts LaGuerta about the situation.
The informant that Quinn hires, Stan Liddy, stages a car accident, which is a trap set for Lumen. She takes the bait easily. Liddy sees the results of her shopping spree, but when he goes back to report to Quinn, Liddy tells him he is going to need more money, included in that is the money to fix his car after it was hit in the set up.
Lumen arrives at the hotel, and they talk. Dexter tells her that she could certainly leave right now if she wanted to. Of course, she would have to do so right now, because otherwise if she is in this, she is caught in the game and it would be very difficult for her to get out of it now. Not that Dexter would kill her, but she would be implicating herself as well. She tells Dexter that “this is the only part of my life that makes sense anymore,” and so she opts to stay for the duration of it. She asks him about the photos of all the women that were raped and murdered, and he tells her of his philosophy that they need to see what they did in front of their eyes. They commence preparations for the room.
Liddy gives a little more information on Dexter, including what happened after his wife was murdered, how Lumen fits into all of this, and so on. It comes out that Lumen looks good for the murder of Rita Morgan, but this is obviously not the case. There is an argument about the aforementioned money issue, and in an attempt to intimidate Quinn, Liddy drops the coffee pot and watches it shatter all over the floor, which only infuriates Quinn.
Lumen and Dexter hear what sounds like a rape in progress, but it turns out to be Cole having sex with some woman perhaps from the audience of the seminar (maybe the “wife” of the obese man from earlier). This brings up a horrible feeling in Lumen, as her mind travels back to her own rape. The kill is delayed due to the screamer woman staying the night. Lumen is amazed that she actually slept through the night.
Before the kill is set to happen, a wrench is thrown in Dexter’s plan when he is called up to the stage by Jordan. He is forced to relive the horrible night when he found his wife murdered and in the bath tub. Lumen spots him on the big projector in the lobby. She goes to head back in a panic, but is then confronted by Cole Harman. Dexter was able to escape, and traps Cole before knocking him out and performing his ritualistic kill. He explains to Lumen about his past, his darker life, and gives her a blood souvenir.
Debra Morgan figures out that it was the newbie who leaked information to the press. Debra tells her good luck, that she is going to need it. Batista promises that he will back her story all the way. Jordan remarks his famous clock lament as he and his security search for Cole. This tips Dexter off, only confirming suspicions that Jordan is one of the other men that raped Lumen.
The last thing we see is Liddy snapping photos of Dexter disposing of the body.
