Doctor Who: The End of the World

The Doctor, seeking to show Rose an unusual event, takes her to the end of the Earth, literally. He takes her forward in time to the impending destruction of the Earth due to the Sun going super nova billions of years in the future.

They land on a specially designed orbital spacecraft that hosts “end of the world” events. All appears normal until strange robot spiders start causing mayhem.

The robot spiders imperil all onboard the orbiting spacecraft, and it’s up to the Doctor to set things straight and find out who onboard is in control of these malicious robots. He must solve this dilemma quickly or a trapped Rose, the rest of the guests, and himself, die along with the Earth in the sun’s death.

Recap

Inside the TARDIS, the Doctor offers to let Rose choose their destination. She selects a hundred years in the future and he dismissively takes them there but is unimpressed with such a dull place. Rose suggests he do better and he cranks up the TARDIS controls and takes them ahead to the year 12,005. Rose laughs in challenge and the Doctor decides to really impress her. Taking the TARDIS far, far forward, they finally materialise and he usher her out into a viewing gallery with the windows shuttered close. The Doctor opens the shutters and reveals that they're on a space station in orbit above Earth... and the sun has begun to expand to envelop it. He explains that they're five billion years in the future, and about to see the end of the world...

The Bad Wolf reference in this episode is: A conversation between the Moxx of Balhoon and the Face of Boe, where the Moxx mentions "The classic Bad Wolf Scenario."

As he was living at the time of "The Long Game" and "Bad Wolf", the Face of Boe is at least 5,000,000,000 years old. In 200100, he was the oldest inhabitant of the Isop Galaxy.

Episode Quotes
Cassandra: (repeated line) Moisturize me!

The Doctor: You lot. You spend all your time thinking about dying, like you're going to get killed by eggs, or beef, or global warming, or asteroids. But you never take time to imagine the impossible. That maybe you survive. This is the year Five billion...and today is, hold on...This is the day the sun expands. (grins) Welcome to the end of the world

The Doctor: You think it'll last forever. The people, and cars, and concrete. But it won't. Then one day it's all gone. Even the sky.

(A jukebox is wheeled out)
Cassandra: And here, another rarity. According to the archives, this was called an "i-Pod." It stores classical music from humanity's greatest composers. Play on!
(Soft Cell's "Tainted Love" starts to play)

Jabe: Perhaps a man only enjoys danger when there's nothing else left. When you came aboard my scanners identified your species. It's remarkable you even exist.

Jabe: Then stop wasting time...Time Lord.

The Doctor: Everything has its time and everything dies.

The Doctor: There was a war. And we lost. I'm a Time Lord. I'm the last of the Time Lords. I'm left travelling on my own cause there's no one else.

Episode Goofs
Britney Spears' Toxic was never released as a 7" 45 rpm vinyl single. The prop team had to make a mock-up for the episode.

The planet Earth is shown exploding at the moment of the sun's expansion into a red giant. This is very unlikely. What would more than likely happen is the oceans would boil, the planet would be scorched, and the atmosphere would burn off. However, the planet would remain in one piece, although probably with a larger orbit.
