Mickey calls the Doctor and Rose back to Earth to look into the strange problems at a school that is exhibiting peculiar goings on. The Doctor, posing as teacher, and Rose, as a cafeteria worker, seek to find out what the situation is. They are surprised when one of the Doctor’s old companions, Sarah Jane Smith, and her robot dog, K-9, appear, to investigate the same peculiarities.
What they find is an alien race trying to use the young students to solve a code they sorely need to move up an evolutionary step.
The Doctor must defeat their attempt, while side stepping questions Sarah Jane Smith has about why the earlier incarnation of the Doctor abandoning her, to never, until now, be seen again. This causes Rose to wonder if this might be her future fate, too.

Mickey: Me? I'm their man in Havana. I'm their technical support. I'm...Oh my god. I'm the tin dog!
| The Doctor: They're Krillitanes. That's bad. Imagine how bad things could possibly get and then add a suitcase full of bad.
| Sarah Jane: You were my life. Do you know what the most difficult thing was? Coping with what happens next. Or what doesn't happen next. You took me to the furthest reaches of the galaxy, you showed me supernovas, intergalactic battles and then you just dropped me back on Earth. How could anything compare to that?

The Doctor: I don't age. I regenerate. But humans decay. You wither and you die. Imagine watching that happen to someone you...
Rose: What, Doctor?
The Doctor: You can spend the rest of your life with me. But I can't spend the rest of mine with you. I have to live on. Alone. That's the curse of the Time Lords.

| The Doctor: You good dog.
K-9: Affirmative.
