• 2009 Specials Confirmed As "Season 4.5" |
Just when you thought The Doctor could rest easy, his perilous and tragic fourth season is not yet over.
Julie Gardner has confirmed that, in order to clear confusion over the authenticity of Stephen Moffat's first season as the "legitimate" fifth season, the upcoming 2009 specials have been classified as a continuation of the fourth season.
The decision mirrors similar stunts with stretching the fourth and final season of Battlestar Galactica across 2008 and 2009 respectively. It also marks the closest the television series has come yet to a full 20-episode U.S season number since it's revival in 2005, with 18 episodes in this season combined with the specials, and 19 if the Albert Hall mini-sode "Music of the Spheres" is also included
The five specials, all of which are written by outgoing head writer Russel T. Davies, with two co-written by Davies with Gareth Roberts and Phil Ford, will air periodically over Christmas 2008, Bank Holidays in 2008, and Christmas 2009, with the fifth, the season finale, expected to air in 2010.
