Schoolteachers Ian and Barbara follow their pupil Susan Foreman home one evening, to a rather strange blue police box. Forcing their way inside, Ian and Barbara discover something that is beyond even their imaginations: a time machine. Transported back in time in the machine (a TARDIS) the pair find themselves trapped in the year 100,000 B.C. They need help, and the only man they can turn to is Susan's Grandfather, and the owner of the TARDIS, known mysteriously as 'the Doctor'...

Episode Quotes |
| |
The Doctor: Have you ever thought what it's like to be wanderers in the Fourth Dimension? Have you? To be exiles? Susan and I are cut off from our own planet - without friends or protection. But one day we shall get back. Yes, one day... | The Doctor: If you could touch the alien sand, and hear the cry of strange birds, and watch them wheel in another sky, would that satisfy you? | The Doctor: Fear makes companions of all of us, Miss Wright. | Ian: Let me get this straight. A thing that looks like a police box standing in a junkyard...it can move anywhere in time and space? | Ian: I know that travel through the fourth dimension is a scientific miracle I didn't expect to find solved in a junkyard. | (Ian refers to the Doctor as "Dr. Foreman")
The Doctor: Eh? Doctor who? What's he talking about? |
