Episode Notes

This episode marks the final appearance of Jon Pertwee (The Third Doctor) on the series.

The Doctor's Bessie makes an appearance.

Richard Hurndall plays the role of the First Doctor in this episode as William Hartnell had died in 1975.

Along with the Sixth Doctor, the First Doctor is one of only two incarnations of the Doctor to have been played by two different actors on screen: William Hartnell and RIchard Hurndall.

From both the Second and Third Doctors' point of view, this episode takes place at some point after "The Three Doctors".

Despite the title, this episode features only three of the five actors who had played the Doctor on the series up to that point: Patrick Troughton, Jon Pertwee and Peter Davison.

Episode Quotes

The First Doctor: I am the Doctor! The original, you might say!

The First Doctor: I suddenly realised what the old proverb meant. "To lose is to win, and he who wins shall lose." It was all part of Rassilon's trap to find out who wanted immortality and put him out of the way. He knew very well that immortality was a curse. Not a blessing.

The First Doctor: (to the Fifth Doctor) You did quite well. Quite well. Hmm. It's reassuring to know that my future is in safe hands.

The Second Doctor: Well I must say goodbye, Brigadier. I really shouldn't be here at all. I'm not exactly breaking the laws of time but I am bending them a little.

The Fifth Doctor: Like Alice, I try to believe three impossible things before breakfast.

The Fifth Doctor: I'm definitely not the man I was... thank goodness!

(Sarah Jane does an impression of the Fourth Doctor for the Third Doctor)
The Third Doctor: (sighs) Teeth and curls.

The Master: A cosmos without the Doctor scarcely bears thinking about.

The Second Doctor: Fancy pants!
The Third Doctor: Scarecrow!

Episode Goofs

Just before he incapacitates the Master, the Brigadier says "Nice to see you again." The Master had regenerated several times since the two had last met in "The Time Monster". There is no way that the Brigadier could have recognised him.

Oddly enough, the Castellan does not regenerate after being killed by the commander. No explanation is given why.

Richard Hurndall was considerably taller than William Hartnell, who originally played the First Doctor. In fact, Hartnell was shorter than Patrick Troughton (The Second Doctor) despite the fact that the First Doctor describes his successor as "the little fellow" in this serial.
