Episode Notes |
| |
Date: 30 December 1999 - 1 January 2000
Location: San Fancisco | This is the only on-screen appearance of the Eighth Doctor (Paul McGann) and the final on screen appearance of the Seventh Doctor (Sylvester McCoy). | This is the only Doctor Who production to be filmed outside of Europe. | This episode originally aired in the United States on May 14, 1996, only six days before the death of Jon Pertwee, who played the Third Doctor on the series from 1970 to 1974. It was first broadcast in Britain on May 27 and was preceded by a tribute to the late actor. | Despite being a short lived television Doctor, Paul McGann would reprise his role in a regular series of Big Finish audio dramas, beginning in January 2001. | Eliza Roberts (Miranda) is the real life wife of Eric Roberts (The Master). | As of 2006, Eric Roberts is the only American to play a Time Lord. | Besides his straw hat, which actually belongs to Sylvester McCoy, the Seventh Doctor's outfit is completely different from the one he wore on the series. | The Eighth Doctor (Paul McGann) is the only one who never encountered the Daleks on-screen. | Mark McGann (the younger brother of Paul McGann), Robert Lindsay, Tim McInnerny and Anthony Head were among the actors who auditioned for the role of the Doctor. Other actors considered for the role included Hugh Laurie, Stephen Fry, Peter O'Toole, Derek Jacobi, Sam Neill, Nigel Havers, Patrick Stewart and Bill Nighy. | The seal of Rassilon is prominently displayed at the top of the TARDIS staircase. | Christopher Eccleston, who later played the Ninth Doctor in Doctor Who (2005), was considered for the role of the Eighth Doctor. | Christopher Lloyd was the first choice to play the Master but he was deemed too expensive. Richard Dean Anderson, Scott Bakula, Patrick Stewart, Leonard Nimoy, Jonathan Pryce, Timothy Dalton, Malcolm McDowell, Christopher Lee, Ben Kingsley, Michael York, Rutger Hauer, F. Murray Abraham, Martin Sheen and John Malkovich were also considered before Eric Roberts was ultimately cast. Ironically, he earned a considerably larger fee than Lloyd had been asking. | The Seventh Doctor died at 10:03 pm on December 30, 1999. His regeneration took place approximately three hours later. | This marks the final appearance of the Master, the Doctor's greatest enemy, in Doctor Who until the 2007 episode "Utopia", in which he was played by both Sir Derek Jacobi and John Simm. |

Episode Quotes |
| |
The Eighth Doctor: You want dominion over the living, yet all you do is kill!
The Master: Life is wasted on the living. | The Eighth Doctor: This is when I wish I had my sonic screwdriver. | The Seventh Doctor: (his final words) Timing malfunction. The Master! He's out there. I've got to stop him. | The Eighth Doctor: (narrating) It was on the planet Skaro that my old enemy, the Master, was finally put on trial. They say he listened calmly as his list of evil crimes was read and sentence passed. Then he made his last, and I thought somewhat curious, request. He demanded that I, the Doctor, a rival Time Lord, should take his remains back to our home planet - Gallifrey. It was a request they should never have granted. | The Eighth Doctor: The Time Lord has 13 lives and the Master had used all of his. But rules never meant much to him, so I stowed his remains safely for the voyage back. Because even in death, I couldn't trust him. In all my travels through space and time, and nearing the end of my seventh life, I was finally beginning to realise that you could never be too careful. | The Eighth Doctor: Grace, I came back to life before your eyes. I held back death. Look, I can't make your dream come true forever, but I can make it come true today. | The Eighth Doctor: (laughs) I love humans. Always seeing patterns in things that aren't there. | The Eighth Doctor: The world's about to be destroyed and I'm stuck in a traffic jam! | The Eighth Doctor: Oh no, not again! | The Eighth Doctor: The sky above us was dancing with lights! Purple, green, brilliant yellow! | The Eighth Doctor: These shoes! They fit perfectly! | The Eighth Doctor: Now, will you kindly stand aside before I shoot myself? | The Eighth Doctor: "Low tech?!" Grace, this is a Type 40 TARDIS, able to take you to any planet in the universe and to any date in that planet's existence! Temporal physics. | The Eighth Doctor: This is no time to be playing doctors and nurses... | The Eighth Doctor: Are you any good at setting alarm clocks? | The Eighth Doctor: Look over there! On the otherside of your galaxy, that's home. 250 million light years away. That's a good ten minutes in this old thing. | The Eighth Doctor: How can you miss me? I'm easy to find! I'm the guy with two hearts, remember? | Grace: It's not often that one has a Time Lord in one's living room, Doctor. | The Eighth Doctor: (narrating) It was on the planet Skaro that my old enemy the Master was finally put on trial. They say he listened calmly as his list of evil crimes was read... and sentence passed. Then he made his last and I thought somewhat curious request. He demanded that I, the Doctor, a rival Timelord, should take his remains back to our home-planet Gallifrey... It was a request they should never have granted... | Grace: (sarcastically) I suppose you knew Madame Curie too.
The Eighth Doctor: Intimately.
Grace: Does she kiss as good as me?
The Master: As well as you. | The Eighth Doctor: You have to get me out of here before they kill me again! | Grace: I finally meet the right guy, and he's from another planet. |
