Episode Summary

A few months have passed, and some of the cracks in the Dollhouse's facade are becoming more visible. Paul has become a "client" of the Dollhouse. He has Echo helping to infiltrate a wealthy, charismatic merchant in "things", a man even the FBI couldn't touch, by becoming his bride. Echo, though, sporadically flashes past imprints, presumably due to Alpha's tampering. Whiskey/Dr. Saunders struggles with her newly conscious awareness of her status as an active and makes Topher the target of her confused responses. Meanwhile, Boyd personally interacts with Saunders in a risky fashion.

Episode Quotes

Adelle: Why in particular does this engagement bother you?
Boyd: You know, after that news anchor...
Adelle: Which one?
Boyd: The one who wanted to be rolled in eggs and flour and dipped in...
Adelle: Ah, Tempura Joe. Such a lonely soul.

Ivy: So... do you want to know what I've been doing while you've overslept?
Topher: If you tweaked an imprint, I'll throw you through that window.

Topher: How many more (imprints) today?
Ivy: Well, the Jonas Brothers are back in town, so...
Topher: Say no more. Voracious little nippers.

Boyd: You seem to be having a hard time.
Dr. Claire Saunders: My entire existence was constructed by a sociopath in a sweater-vest. What do you suggest I do?
Boyd: Have dinner with me.

Echo: Is this about the sex? I know, for you, the act of love is the most intimate and precious thing two people can share. But it's just bodies. It's useful. And with Klar, it's pretty damn fun. Man's got a work ethic.

Adelle: Well, this is charmless, isn't it? What do you think, Mr. Langton?
Boyd: I like his suit.
Adelle: You may well be missing the point.

Paul: You're working an angle.
Adelle: With the exception of the "very special" and the comatose, have you ever met someone who wasn't?

(startled by finding Dr. Saunders, wearing her underwear and not much else, in his bed)
Topher: You need a frickin' treatment!
Dr. Claire Saunders: Why shouldn't I love you? Aren't you lovable? Aren't you Big Brother? Aren't you the Lord my God? Why should I fight your divine plan?
Topher: Because you're better than that. You're better than me.

Topher: She could be concussed. I'm calling it.
Paul: You move in now, Klar will kill her for sure.
Topher: You got a better plan?
Paul: No, but I do have a much worse one.

Cultural References

Boyd: The one who wanted to be rolled in eggs and flour and dipped in...
Adelle: Ah, Tempura Joe. Such a lonely soul.

Tempura is a Japanese dish, consisting of deep fried battered vegetables, meat, or seafood. Very popular in Japan.

Analysis

With this episode Whedon continues his masterful examination into the nature of identity and its ties to memory. Via the mechanisms of Echo and Saunders/Whiskey in particular, and their various interactions with Paul, Topher and Boyd, he continues to ask important questions about this technology and what it would mean to humanity.
