Episode Notes |

This unaired episode includes some scenes cribbed from the also unaired pilot episode. The episode was shot on a shoestring budget when Joss Whedon was working on convincing the Fox execs to renew the show. The notion was that he wanted to give them the option to know that there were less expensive routes he could take the story if they wanted to substantially cut costs. In the end, Fox renewed it as-is, so the storyline directions taken by Epitaph are no longer necessarily accurate as to the future of the Dollhouse universe. | The technology suggested, of being able to download a personality through a communications line is fairly doubtful as to possibility, at least anywhere in the vaguely near future. While one must speculate on the technologies involved in imprinting people, the bandwidth demands alone are highly impractical even for a direct connection. Doing it from a distance, and wirelessly, would be so far beyond any communications capabilities foreseeable for even the next 20-30 years that it would require a tremendous breakthrough in order to even think of doing it. So either the Dollhouse universe is vastly ahead of us in wireless communications bandwidth technologies or someone missed the boat on this element of the idea, because it is never justified at any point. A small "quibble", but a very important one for good Science Fiction, which, for the most part, Dollhouse is. |
