Wendy Patrakas, played by Melanie Lynskey
Wendy is an unknown quantity outside of The Race - married to an abusive husband, she participates in The Race in order to give herself and her newborn baby, Sam, a life away from her husband Richard. Leaving her baby behind in a home of some sort, she takes to the roads - but Richard isn't far behind, as he is tracking her credit cards.
Wendy comes across as a gentle, caring person - but when pushed, especially where her baby's concerned, she can let the crazy fly. After coming in last place at the first checkpoint, she is given the task of eliminating a competitor (Ivy), and after some thought and coercion from The Sponsors, she corners Ivy and her co-competitors - unfortunately, her nervousness allows Ivy the upper hand, who takes the gun off her before coming up with a unique twist to the elimination - instead of dying, she'll team up with Wendy instead.
Wendy is initially unsure of this partnership, but decides it's better in the long run than murder, so she reluctantly agrees. Their attempts to bond are feeble at best, and when Ivy rubs Wendy up the wrong way one too many times - by moving Sam's car seat out of the back so she can stretch out - she gives Ivy a taste of her crazy.
The two carry on racing, albeit uncomfortably, until Wendy receives a call from the house she left Sam in - Richard has been snooping. Determined to keep her baby safe, above all else, Wendy decides to ditch The Race - but finds that Ivy's own brand of crazy is a formidable opponent, when she's held at gunpoint to continue racing. |
