Alex Tully, played by Nathan Fillion
Joined the race as part of his effort to determine what happened to his wife Kathryn, who is currently missing - having been kidnapped by The Race Sponsors, who wanted to coerce Alex into racing.
In his normal life, Alex is a landscaper/gardener, although this was not always true - prior to meeting Kathryn, Alex is believed to have been part of a criminal underground. He was the "wheel man" for a group of bank robbers, and it is suggested that this was not his first foray into criminal activity. It is this Alex, the violent amoral Alex, the The Sponsors are interested in having participate in their Race.
To that end, after it becomes evident that Alex is not yet willing to return to the person he once was, before Kathryn, The Sponsors set up an elaborate con involving a fake police officer, and the knowledge of his involvement in the bank robbery/shooting. They use this to bring the old Alex to the fore - and also to give him his old car back, a 72 Dodger, which he then participates in The Race with after his truck broke down.
Alex is not overly fond of Corinna, his de facto partner, although the two share a common bond - both have lost someone to The Sponsors (Corinna was kidnapped as a child, in order to force her parents to race - they were subsequently killed). This seems to be the starting point to a working friendship, and the further they get into The Race, the more respect Alex has for Corinna.

Corinna Wiles, played by Kristin Lehman
Originally a stowaway on The Race, in the back of Alex Tully's pick-up truck, Corinna soon becomes an official Racer when Alex (in a feeble attempt to duck out of The Race) makes her his partner. Her interest in The Race does not lie with winning, however - merely in finding out the identities of The Sponsors.
When she was a little girl, Corinna was kidnapped by The Sponsors in an effort to coerce her parents into racing (a similar situation that Alex finds himself in). As her parents raced to the finish line, they were ran off the road and subsequently died in the crash - with Corinna watching on. Now, as an adult, Corinna is determined to find those she believes responsible for her parents' deaths - and get her revenge. Corinna believes her best bet for this is to team up with Alex, who has as much of a personal stake in getting to the finish line than her parents - and she hopes their common experiences will drive them to success.
Initially, Corinna dupes Alex into keeping her around by telling him that she has an ecrypted data key that holds information on The Race, it's finish line - and The Sponsors. When Alex discovers that is a lie, she tells him what is really on the device - information about the Racers. Corinna intends to use this information as leverage against the other Racers, in order to increase their chances of winning - and while Alex is initially skeptical, once he discovers her identity and why she cares so much about The Race, he is on board. The two pair up, and Corinna proves her worth by attempting to find Alex after he is taken away by the fake policeman (as part of The Sponsors' con), despite the possibility that they will end up in last place.
When they start the next leg, Corinna argues for not taking the "jump start" The Sponsors have offered them (a chance to skip ahead a checkpoint), knowing full well what The Sponsors generally ask of Racers in these situations. Unfortunately, Alex is all for it - and it is Corinna that comes up with the idea to involve the Salazar brothers, after they decide that they can't perform the task (rob a bank) by themselves. |

Ellie Laird, played by Mircea Monroe
Ellie has one reason, and one reason only, for joining The Race - keeping her husband, Rob, away from the army. Ellie is well aware that her husband's unit has been shipped back to Iraq, but keeps this knowledge from him (deleting phone messages, destroying letters). She hopes that if they win The Race, the money will allow them to start anew, somewhere far away from the US.
Unfortunately for Ellie, Rob soon becomes aware of his AWOL status, and confronts her - while she tries the waterworks-angle, telling him that she just wants him alive, he forces her hand by throwing their Race phone out of the car - effectively cutting them off from The Race. Distraught, Ellie realises her husband is determined to face the punishment for going AWOL, rather than stay in The Race with her, |

Ivy Chitty, played by Taryn Manning
A feisty Hurricane Katrina survivor, Ivy initially joined The Race with fellow New Orleans citizens Susan and Leigh. However, her morally-questionable ideas on how to win The Race conflicted with her partners', which led to a falling out between the three women.
When Wendy Patrakas was ordered to eliminate Ivy from the competition, Ivy was presented with a unique opportunity - after getting over the shock that out of everyone, she had been targeted by The Sponsors, she realised there was a loophole - all she had to do was switch cars. Without skipping a beat, Ivy joined forces with Wendy, shooting out the tires of her former co-competitors, effectively stranding them.
Unfortunately, Ivy had no idea what she had let herself in for - Wendy's personal situation made for a less-than-ideal atmosphere in the car, and when Wendy decided to ditch The Race in favour of going back for her son, Ivy took matters into her own hands once again - holding Wendy at gunpoint with the same gun Wendy had been given to initially kill Ivy. She is determined to win this Race at any cost - and she'll need a partner to help her, seeing as she can't actually drive. |

Leigh Barnthouse, played by Rochelle Aytes
A Hurricane Katrina survivor, Leigh is an unknown quantity in The Race. Having met Ivy and Susan during the hurricane, the decision to do The Race together has an adverse affect on their friendship when she and Susan realise what Ivy is made of, ethically and morally speaking. After Ivy jumps ship, to pair up with Wendy, Leigh and Susan are left stranded with shot-out tires, seemingly out of The Race for good.
Luckily for them, Mr Bright calls them with the location of the checkpoint, and when Susan and Leigh get back on their feet they head straight there. Unfortunately, he has only asked them there so that they can return the Race phone - they're out. While Leigh is resigned to the fact and just wants to go home, Susan is adamant they will win - eventually she coerces Leigh to her point of view when they find the Race phone ditched by Rob & Ellie; Leigh is even the one to figure out the location of the next checkpoint.
But this good news doesn't last long - The girls are run off the road by a mysterious black monster truck (possibly sent by The Sponsors, possibly an outside force), and subsequently pummelled into by the truck. Upon awakening in the wreckage, Leigh heads over to Susan - only to find her dying. Determined to finish The Race as vengeance for her dead friend, Leigh heads back out onto the roads, heading for the next checkpoint. |

Rob Laird, played by Riley Smith
Army Soldier Rob thought he was on leave when he started The Race - he was wrong. Unbeknownst to him, his unit had shipped back to Iraq, and he was now AWOL - a fact his wife Ellie was intentionally keeping from him.
When he started The Race, Rob was keen to use his military service and experience to call in favours from various sources (Air Force personnel, patriotic truckers) in order to get ahead. Ironically, it wasn't until he saw a news report on the Iraq War that he began to twig that something might be wrong - true enough, when he finally found a landline to call his commanding officer, he was told of his AWOL status, and that if he did come back he'd face a court martial and charges. Enraged, Rob realised what Ellie had done to him, and confronted his wife - explaining to her that the maximum penalty for going AWOL is death, and now going back could very well lead to his execution. |

Sean Salazar, played by J. D. Pardo
Sean is not initially a Racer - his introduction to The Race comes courtesy of Winston, who he first meets when Winston is robbing his house. While holding him at gunpoint, believing him to be a petty theif, Sean is distraught to learn the truth of Winston's identity from their father - they are half-brothers.
Pissed off with Daddy Salazar, Sean is convinced by a desperate Winston (who needs money) to partner up with him in The Race. The pair of them head off, and find themselves in a tight race with Alex and Corinna for the first checkpoint (although what neither driver knew was that they were nowhere near first place).
As The Race progresses, Sean attempts to bond with Winston, and everything seems to be going okay - until Sean's goody-goody nature sees him helping Violet and John out, to Winston's disapproval, when John collapses. Things go from bad to worse when Winston is apprehended by a bounty hunter, but luckily Sean has just the ticket to get him released - he forces his dad's lawyer's hand, and at the same time handing back all of the family credit cards, effectively cutting himself off from Daddy Salazar. Unfortunately, Winston is not impressed with Sean's gesture, believing that Sean merely rang up their father. The tension continues when Winston tries to follow Alex and Corinna on their "jump start", so Sean ends up assisting with a bank robbery in a misguided attempt to impress Winston - an attempt that sees Sean shot and wounded. |

Violet Trimble [Credited as Emma Stone], played by Emily Stone
Violet is initially an unknowing participant in The Race, dragged along by her father John. But after she begins to question his actions (which include travelling to the other side of the country after picking her up from school), he gives her the truth - that they are in a Race to win 32 million dollars. Naturally, as most 15-year olds would do, Violet is immediately on board with this plan.
Violet herself is a bubbly, outgoing girl who clearly loves her father - and to that effect, she is becoming increasingly worried about his detoriating health. |

Wendy Patrakas, played by Melanie Lynskey
Wendy is an unknown quantity outside of The Race - married to an abusive husband, she participates in The Race in order to give herself and her newborn baby, Sam, a life away from her husband Richard. Leaving her baby behind in a home of some sort, she takes to the roads - but Richard isn't far behind, as he is tracking her credit cards.
Wendy comes across as a gentle, caring person - but when pushed, especially where her baby's concerned, she can let the crazy fly. After coming in last place at the first checkpoint, she is given the task of eliminating a competitor (Ivy), and after some thought and coercion from The Sponsors, she corners Ivy and her co-competitors - unfortunately, her nervousness allows Ivy the upper hand, who takes the gun off her before coming up with a unique twist to the elimination - instead of dying, she'll team up with Wendy instead.
Wendy is initially unsure of this partnership, but decides it's better in the long run than murder, so she reluctantly agrees. Their attempts to bond are feeble at best, and when Ivy rubs Wendy up the wrong way one too many times - by moving Sam's car seat out of the back so she can stretch out - she gives Ivy a taste of her crazy.
The two carry on racing, albeit uncomfortably, until Wendy receives a call from the house she left Sam in - Richard has been snooping. Determined to keep her baby safe, above all else, Wendy decides to ditch The Race - but finds that Ivy's own brand of crazy is a formidable opponent, when she's held at gunpoint to continue racing. |

Winston Salazar, played by Kevin Alejandro
Winston's first dealing with The Sponsors is when they bail him out of prison, and giving him the opportunity to take part in The Race. But of course, for racing you need money, so Winston turns to his father (who he initially believes was the one to bail him out) for assistance - and when that hits a dead end, he decides to rob his father's house. It's there he meets his half-brother, Sean.
Winston, it turns out, has known about Sean all his life - his mother had Winston pray for Sean every week - although Sean is unconvinced. But when Winston forces their father's hand, the truth finally comes out, and Winston finds himself not only with money for The Race - but a new partner.
Initially the pair work together well, and Winston is especially keen to start the bonding. But it all starts to go downhill when Sean helps out John and Violet - and Winston is unimpressed with Sean's "weak" survival instincts in the face of a pretty girl. Of course, Winston quickly shows he's hardly immune to the charms of a beautiful woman - on the way to Rome, Georgia, Winston "car flirts" with a pretty brunette, and when they pull over at a gas station he makes his move - only to find out that she's a bounty hunter.
While he's dragged away, he tells Sean to keep on racing - but Sean has other ideas, and calls in a favour from his father's lawyer to get the bounty hunter to release him. Winston, however, is unclear on what Sean actually did to get his release, and believes that Sean called up their father - his trust and respect for Sean gone, Winston goes back to racing without bothering to bond with his half-brother.
Winston's next "bright idea" involves following Alex and Corinna on their "Jump Start" and offering them a quid pro quo deal - of course, Winston is immediately discovered and ditched. But when Alex and Corinna realise they need his questionable expertise on robberies, they cut him a deal, and both he and Sean go along on the robbery. Once inside, Winston is impressed with his brother's computer skills, but they don't get long before confronted by a security guard. Winston himself is targeted by the guard, who begins shooting once Alex enters the fray, but is saved by his own brother Sean - who had been shot himself. |
